Tip here - If anyone is considering applying for Global Entry, be sure to apply well ahead of time.

My wife and I applied earlier this year. She received temporary approval the next day and then scheduled her in-person interview, which had a three-month waiting period. Somehow I went into manual review and seven months later I received my temporary approval. My in-person is another three months away. I guess I should be happy as I contacted my congressperson's office to see if they could speed things up. They were told my projected initial review was not planned until next July.

WOW, DHS must have went downhill. My wife and I applied in 2013 and it was processed fairly quick. We did have to drive to the CVG airport for our interview (which was basically just getting our picture taken for the card). The card is good for 5 years. In 2018 we applied (online) for renewal and they was readily approved without another interview. They just mailed us a new card, etc. and told to destroy the old one. Then again 2023, the same thing. It's been worth the money*; when you come back into the country the process is a lot faster and in addition, you also get TSA PreCheck at US airports.

*Actually it was basically free in 2023. We each applied for a Chase Bank (United Airlines) credit card, there is no annual fee the first year, and they reimburse you for the Global Entry fee, etc. In addition, if your timing is right (i.e. they are running a promotion) you can 60,000 free miles too.

Up to $120 Global Entry or TSA PreCheck ® fee credit
Cardmembers can receive a statement credit of up to $120 every four years as reimbursement for the application fee for Global Entry, TSA PreCheck or NEXUS when charged to a United Explorer Card.

You can then just cancel card after the year is up; however we do keep one to get the free luggage and priority boarding.

We did the TSA thing in 2017 for cruise in Europe, and worked wonderfully. Had to go to LAX for interviews and got OKed quickly, as some of you above. With the advent of credit cards paying for this thing, would imagine that the lines have gotten longer, and the interview is a thing of the past. Would guess mostly done by internet review (driving record, court record etc). Well, the lines at airport have gotten longer, and if you have an artificial joint, you have to get in line with the 'great unwashed' to be processed through, meanwhile, wife and daughter are waiting, tapping their feet....tip of the day, when you're going through the TSA line, tell the folk that 'we appreciate what you are doing to keep us safe'. Brings a smile and thank you every time. Certainly wouldn't want their job, and don't want us to go with the Uzi carrying guards that are in more than several worldwide airports.

Not surprised. My wife and I have NEXUS (we sometimes sail back and fourth to Canada) which includes Global Entry, which is really great. Got it in 2015 and had to do an interview at a US/Canada border location. Only had to wait about a month then. It was time to renew this year and we were dreading a repeat trip to a land border location. Turns out they were so backed up that they just rubber stamped our renewal application without any interview needed.

So hang in there. Once you're in, any backups might work in your favor.
