"Acquired" a copy of Windows Vista

Which do you prefer, Ubuntu or Xubuntu?
I haven't messed with Xubuntu or Kubuntu. I started out on Mandrake (which is KDE) and I liked that a lot. But I just stuck with the standard gnome on Ubuntu. We used to have Debian running X in the lab here and I didn't like that at all. It was just a matter of already liking what I saw in Ubuntu and sticking with it.

If you run linux then you should check out Beryl (http://www.beryl-project.org/). It's a desktop theme/enhancer. It makes things look real nice, and surprisingly doesn't use a whole lot of system resources. A few screen shots can be seen here http://www.beryl-project.org/features.php .

Do NOT use this OS unless you have a gig of RAM. Just running background processes is chewing up nearly 500k of my memory, let alone what happens when I start running apps.

I have IE and AIM open, and Vista is using 842MB
I say get at least 2 gigs

Other than being a mem hog, I really like vista so far

edit: internet explorer is using 118MB

I have Explorer, Firefox, AIM, GMail Noitify, and Virusscan and am using 462.

It doesn't make sense, but after I defragged, i started using a good 200 less.

Media Center comes with everything but Home Basic I believe. Home Premium does include it (that's what I am using). I am not sure what the retail runs, but you can get premium OEM for $115
nice.. 115 isnt bad, does microcenter still have the liscense to sell OEMs w/o hardware?

I hate to admit it, but I've got 2 more gigs of RAM and a less antiquated graphics card coming.... this thing will be smokin.

Side question... how do your systems stack up on the windows performance index (It's in control panel > performance information and tools)??

Mine's about like this:

overall 3.4

Processor : 4.8 (Pentium D 830, 3.0 GHz)
RAM 4.5 (1 gig PC5400)
Graphics 3.5 (Nvidia GeForce FX6600LE)
Gaming Grafix 3.4 (Ditto)
HDD 4.5 (Idunno, some POS :) )

clearly it's my POS video card that's holding things up

If you hit a lot of Java enabled sites, or weather sites (radars especially) go to the following and see what you have:

C:\Documents and Settings\{USERID}\Local Settings\Application Data

Look for a Sun folder.

All this is .jar information that will regenerate every time you hit the site.

Here's what I got:

Processor: 4.1 (Athlon 64 3000+)
RAM: 4.3 (1 gig PC something)
Graphics: 3.5 (Radeon 9600 something)
Gaming Graphics: 3.4 (same)
HDD: 5.3 (2 old Maxtor 40Gb 7200 RPM HDDs and a 200Gb Maxtor SATA)

My video card is clearly holding me down too, but no clue how my hard disks got rated so good. I used to Raid the two IDEs until I had to format and lost everything since it was Stripe 0. Also, my OS is installed on one of the IDE drives because I was too lazy to do the driver install on XP for the SATA.

I don't play computer games, so I won't update my graphics card.

MEM: 4.5 (2gig DDR2)
Graphics 3.3
3D graphics 3.1
HDD 4.8

I dont play games either, so I really dont care about video peformance.

I need some home networking help too.
I can see my laptop from the desktop PC running XP, but I cant see the PC from the laptop.
Anyone have any ideas why?
I have tried everything.
