Off the top of my head, I'd say checking whether you had an apartment in Columbus and did you generate any W-2 income out of state. Stay in Columbus over the Summer and do an internship or undergrad research position, take a part-time job, drink some beers. It'll work out.

If you're in-state for UVA, I agree that would be hard to turn down. OTOH, if you were one of the first batch of acceptances and you're competitive for admission to UVA, I'm assuming you have a strong application. The first batch of acceptances are to those students that Ohio State really wants, so make sure you're on top of the merit-aid packages and all of the merit options that are available to you, as well as pre-enrollment into Honors & Scholars.

I've applied to James Madison, UNC-Chapel Hill, and Virginia Tech, and am about done with my applications for the University of Virginia, and William & Mary.

As far as where I want to go, tOSU is at the top of the list. But it would be hard to turn down UVA, if I ended up getting accepted (still a reach), considering how great of a school it is, it's affordability, and location to me.

Well, I have my grandparents and aunt that live in the Columbus area, so I could use them as my address for my in-state residence. I mean I would do everything else that I need to do to be in-state, I would just probably be gone longer than 3 weeks in the summer to go back home to see family and friends. I know I can use them as in-state funds through "financial gifts", to go towards my income from Ohio.

But yeah, doesn't tOSU just do acceptances with rolling admisisons? So basically, the earlier you apply (i did October 29th), the earlier you hear back? I mean my SAT scores and grades matched up well with what I found out to be the averages for tOSU's incoming freshmen, so I knew I had a good chance to get in. I still have a chance at UVA, but it would definitely take some good fortune, because I've seen some really smart kids get turned down from there.

But, financial aid through merit scholarships and the National Buckeye Award would be awesome. That would be huge for me to be able to go there, so let's hope so.

Not to steal any thunder, but I too just got accepted to The Ohio State University.

I'm sort of in the same boat as far as the out-of-state situation. OSU is obviously my favorite school...my dream school. But, I'm not sure how well it work out financially for me. I've got a lot of family in Columbus (aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents...pretty much everyone) that I could say I live with, but I don't know about that. I've been accepted to all the other schools I've applied to, including my 1b choice...IU, which is tons easier on me (financially, proximity to friends, family, and of course they have a good school for what I want to major). Then there's also the fact that I could play soccer at some DII or III schools locally, and well...OSU's soccer team is in the Elite 8 currently :p. But mostly it's down to IU (solid, home school choice) and Ohio State (!!!).

Now I expect I'll get some replies that tell me to just "work hard, apply for scholarships like non-other, and you can get it done" or "if you believe it, you can achieve it!" We'll see what happens, but it'll be a tough decision no doubt.

Congrats man. I know there is a way to get in-state tuition, so I would recommend checking out the guidelines and rules for residency for tuition at tOSU. Definitely go over it carefully with a parent (or whoever is going to be paying for most of your college), and see how you can make things work for atleast your sophomore - senior years.

I saw it on 60 minutes. You find one of those nice Nigerian guys. They find a friend who works in a bank who has discovered that a client that has died without a will and no heirs. You send him just about a year's tuition, as a sign of good faith, so he knows he can trust you and to help "smooth things", and then he sends you the money from the account. You make a cool $1 million or more.

I'm told that this is the one way to make absolutely certain that you won't have to worry about money during college.
