Academic Honors for Buckeye football players

Let me go on record as being especially pleased that the following Buckeyes received their degrees: Evan Blankenship, Connor Smith, Taurian Washington and Joe Bauserman.

These players all, to some degree, performed at a level that probably disappointed some fans and perhaps themselves. Yet they took advantage of the scholarship to get the single most important benefit of student-athlete status: the diploma.

Congratulations to all new Ohio State graduates. Go get 'em!

Exactly. Not everyone is going to be a football player all their lives, so use that degree and make Buckeye Nation proud in the real world.

Ohio State football: Push for academic success is paying off for Buckeyes
By Tim May
The Columbus Dispatch Sunday June 24, 2012

Making the grade

Academic Progress Rate scores for the Ohio State football team since the inception of the APR:

? 2005-06: 928

? 2006-07: 942

? 2007-08: 968

? 2008-09: 975

? 2009-10: 985

? 2010-11: 988

Professor John Bruno has witnessed coach Urban Meyer?s approach to motivating his Ohio State football players to strive academically as well as athletically, and there?s no real secret to it.

?I don?t see Urban as having any magical sticks or tricks,? said Bruno, a professor of psychology and OSU?s faculty athletics representative. ?I think it?s simply a consistent message of excellence, and an explicit message that under that umbrella of excellence is academic performance.?

It?s not wished for, Meyer said; it?s expected. And he holds all involved accountable, from players to the support staff and, especially, assistant coaches.

?When I hire a coaching staff, the No. 1 thing is recruiting. No. 2 is what we call power of the unit, which means the performance of your players off the field as well as on the field,? Meyer said. ?Then the third one is your enhancement (of the scheme and team performance).

?You?ll never hear me say I?m going to go hire a guru; those people don?t exist. ? It?s all about getting your players to perform. So our coaches take a very active role in academic performance. If they can?t do that, they won?t work here.?

Three Buckeyes Named to NFF Honor Society
Only 19 from the Big Ten Conference honored
May 3, 2013

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State had three of the 19 student-athletes from the Big Ten Conference who were honored and named to the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame's (NFF) Hampshire Honor Society yesterday.

Buckeyes from the 2012 team named to the NFF's relatively new - it is in its seventh year - honor society are Ben Buchanan, from Westerville, Ohio, Adam Homan (Coldwater, Ohio) and Stewart Smith (New Albany, Ohio).

All three individuals met criteria for admission that included being a starter or significant reserve in one's last year of eligibility, carrying a minimum 3.2 cumlative grade point average throughout the entire course of undergraduate study, and meeting all NCAA-mandated progress toward degree requirements and graduation.

Buchanan, a three-year starting punter for the Buckeyes, has a degree in strategic communications and he is one internship - which he will complete this summer in the Westerville Central H.S. athletics department - away from his master's degree in sports administration.

Homan, a fullback and key special team's player for the Buckeyes who played in nine games this year (he missed three because of injury) and 43 for his career, will graduate Sunday with his degree in exercise science.

Smith was a key special team's player in the final six games of the season for the Buckeyes. He played in 17 games throughout his career and he graduated in December with his degree in biology.

All three players were multiple honorees as Academic All-Big Ten and as OSU Scholar-Athletes. Buchanan and Homan were each Academic All-Big Ten three times and an OSU Scholar-Athlete five times. Smith was Academic All-Big Ten once and an OSU Scholar-Athlete four times.
