ABC Switch Discussion (Merged)

What pisses me off is that GamePlan chose not to show the game on channel 776 (which was the one reserved for the OSU-MU game) due to the fact that it was broadcast here, yet once ABC decided to switch to the TCU-OU game, they thought it would be OK to start showing our game on 776 (after an obviously corporate delay). What the fuck?! Just show the fucking game from the git-go...they just don't want to pay for the satellite bandwidth. Cheap fuckers...

i do agree with this though, for those out there who paid extra to get the Gameday package or whatever its called for you, you should be able to have the game available whenever you want. But as far as regular cable, once a game is out of hand and towards the end, you have to make a decision to show a closer and undecided game.

ESPN Gameplan must have added a bunch of users yesterday because of the ABC switch.

I added it so that I could see the rest of the game (and as I may miss a bunch this season otherwise anyway. . .)

Figured it was the same price as going to a bar once or twice. :)

Whoops, commercial cutting-thingy program didn't work as expected. It cut everything except for a Hummer H3 commercial, and it missed it 3 times! Re-doing the divx rip this time with (hopefully) all the commercials cut out. 55% done, probably another 2 hours to complete. Hang in there folks...

thats complete bull!!! IF i wanted to watch chokelahoma or some other game id buy a gameday package that would allow me to watch any team i want. I LIVE IN OHIO! I WANT TO WATCH OHIO STATE!!! i don't care if tOSU is up 900 or down 900. if i want to watch someone else play ill buy a package that allows me to do exactly that. don't take away a game i WANT to watch for something you "think" might entertain me more. i don't pay abc to think, i pay them to air tOSU games. seeing as how this is all i ask of them, you can bet that when they fail to do something so simple they can fully expect my size 14 bootfoot lodged sideways in an oraphis of my choosing.

I called DirecTV as soon as the game cut out and I saw it was still blacked out on GamePlan. They said they would switch it, but then the guy hung up on me when he put me on hold. I called back hot and went on a rant.

I explained to them that I shell out $150 a year for Gameplan just to see a handfull of Buckeye games and furthermore the only reason I ever got DirecTV in the first place was it used to be the only way to get gameplan. Now I'm stuck listening to the game on a feed through my Time Warner cable modem and come to think of it I can get gameplan through cable now can't I? Hmm, maybe I should call TimeWarner, etc.

Long story short: I now get ESPNU, all the fox sports channels, the college sports network, etc. for the next 6 months and then the game came back on.

My understanding is that they have no choice but to block out a game already being shown on a local channel with paid commercials, etc. Just the same, I was not happy about how long it took them to switch and about being hung up on.

Truely this is ABC-ESPN's fault as they shouldn't be allowed to buy up more games than they can show.

Then what is the point of regional coverage?

The point is so that when one game has been decided, the network has other games they can show that most fans will want to see instead. It's not their fault there are so many people in Ohio who's lives revolve around college football.

The funniest thing is that there are losers who actually called into their local television stations. Too funny.

so... the point of "regional coverage" is to give the network the option to air a different game once one has been "magically" decided? do you need me to define the words "regional" and "coverage" for you because i doubt you understand what these words mean...

you realize they cut the tOSU game midway through the 3rd with tOSU leading by only 27 right? you know kinda alot can happen in an entire 1/4 of a football game... or maybe you think the refs should have stopped the game right there and named tOSU the winner...

its not the networks fault that they failed to provide a promised service and their client base got pissed? whose fault is it? god?

your right, when an agreement is violated the victims should just stfu and take it.

My buddy and his family are diehard buckeye fans. He and his wife are originally from Virginia, but attended OSU. They are back in Virginia and had a big party at their house for buckeyes of like mind only to miss a chunk of the game due to blackouts....sorry folks but that is bullshit. You pay for a service in order to watch your team, but the service then decides whats best for you. That is piss poor. The whole purpose for having those tickets is to follow a team that is not in your region!!

Yeah, MIami was just about ready to come back. :roll1:

I have a funny feeling that if ABC had cut away from the OSU/PSU game in 1994 with PSU up 63-6, nobody would have cared. :roll1:

You thought switching over was bad...

My local ABC affliate decided they would air the MSU - Kent State game (the ESPN plus feed) instead of showing the regular ABC broadcast of the OSU - Miami game. That's what I get for living in Michigan.

Here's my takes on the ABC Switch:

1. My Dad usually drives about an hour/hour & a half from his house in NJ to watch the games with me here in CT. When people make plans to watch these games, and in some cases travel distances to watch them, its a stupid thing to switch to something else when you've advertised something else all week. He basically drove three hours to see one & a half hours of football.

2. And to Mili's 'switch' point, I didn't know the game was on any of the PPV channels after the switch. At least notify the viewers of this, so we can be directed to the game we want to see. I would've ponied up the $15 to see the 2nd half rather than sit through a game I have no interest in.

3. With the modern day proliferation of sports bars, PPV packages, satellite dishes, etc. There's no frickin need to "switch" to another game on a national network broadcast. Any Oklahoma fans (outside of OK) itching to see that game were probably at a sports bar or had the game ordered up already. And any neutral fans dying to see the game were probably at a sports bar sucking down a couple pops watching 3 or 4 games at the same time.

So all ABC did was piss off the out of state Ohio State fans watching the game. I don't think millions of neutral viewers magically found out that the Oklahoma game was on and tuned in, and any Oklahoma fans already had full access to their game.

This isn't the 60's or 70's when the National Game of the Week was the only one available to America. They advertised the frickin game, then stick with the game. I pay too damn much money on cable TV and PPV to ever get shut out of the game that I want to watch.

no i think the point of regional coverage is to highlight and make your local team the primary game and show it. Once the game is really over and you got a top ten team being upset its not exactly that crazy to switch over. I mean i was actually leaving the house after we went up 27-0 because i went to get a head start on some work and didnt find out they switched untill later. i think a lot of you should find more to do than watch the second team get scored on during blow-outs...........

yep, cause no team in the history of football has ever come back from 27 points... if you have better things to do than watch the bucks play thats your business. personally, i bust my ass all week so i can dedicate a few hours each weekend to watch my bucks play. i hope for blow outs like this every year so i can watch the second and 3rd teamers get on the field. many of these guys will never play again. forgive me if i want to watch them achieving their dream.
