A look ahead to 07-08' Big Ten Season

Head Coach
I really think we are going to see an improved league next year...I have capsles for each team with guys leaving and guys returning, and then I have my predictions at this very early stage at the very end.

:psu2:

Penn State brings back their 3 leading scorers in Cornley, Claxton, and Morrissey. Their only big lose is Ben Luber, but they have their best players back, and they always seem to play teams tough and I think this next year could be a little break out from the cellar of the big ten and might have a 5 or 6 win season in the big ten. They don't have a great recruiting class, but have 2 solid players coming in.

:nw2:

I don't think the Wildcats will be much different than they were this past year. They do return their leading scorer who was just a frosh this
year in Coble and also bring back craig Moore and Sterling Williams, but they lose Tim Doyle who was really the main hope for the Wildcats. Another year of trying to slow things down and pull an upset or two and ending the year in the cellar.

:minn2:

The Gophers might be a team that could make a push for the middle of the pack talk in the Big Ten next year. Lawrence McKenzie is a very good player and he will be back for his senior year. The Gophers didnt have a single player graduate and with a year under their belt they should all be a lot better than they were last year. Not a lot coming in, only 2 3 star recruits.

:scum2:

The Scummers lose Abram, Harris, Petway, and Sims. Beilein is going to have his hands full in turning this team around next year. They have no one returning that averaged 6 or more pts/game. They do have 2 pretty good recruits in Alex Legion and Corprayle Harris if Beilein is able to hold on to them. If not they are going to be battling NW for the bottom team in the Big Ten.

:msu2:

The Spartans are another team that returns all of their players. Drew Neitzel is going to make a case for player of the year in the Big Ten next year. Walton will be back and he is a very good defensive player with an improving offensive game. Gray, Ibok, Morgan, Suton, and Naymick are also all back. They are also bring in 3 very highly rated recruits in 5 star recruit Durrell Summers and 2 4 star recruits in Chris Allen and Kalin Lucas. Summers is a very smooth player and could see some time at the SF to have a 3 guard lineup with Neitzel, Walton, and Summers. Then they have Morgan who will have another year under his belt after a solid freshmen season and the big guys inside to man the 5 position. They will be a very solid team and will be a fixture in the top 20 all season.

:iowa2:

The Hawkeye lose their best player and 20 pt/game scorer in Adam Haluska. They also lose Mike Henderson who was a very steady pg. They do bring back one of the better players in the league in Tyler Smith and also their 3rd leading scorer in Tony Freeman. Another team that will be breaking in a new coach as ex Butler coach Todd Lickliter will be the coach. They are bringing in 3 3 star recruits that I don't know anything about. Could be a tough year for Iowa unless they have some guys step up.

:purdue2:

The Boilers lose their 2 best players in the Landry and Teague. They do bring back solid players in Crhis Kramer, Chris Lutz and Tarrance Crump, and Gordan Watt. After that Purdue will be relying heavily on their incoming class of freshmen. They have 1 5 star recruit in E'Twaun Moore who can really play. He Will probably play the point, and then they also bring in two 4 star, long athletic wing recruits in Robbie Hummell and Scott Martin. They are 6'8'' and 6'7'' respectively. The problem that Purdue will have is height inside. They are also brining in a 6'10 PF in Jujuan Johnson and they have 2 guys 6'10 and 6'11 on their roster that each averaged 6 mninutes a game last year, so they are going to need to play next year. They are a team that will be loaded in the backcourt with athletic guys that can shoot and score the ball, but will need some guys to step up inside or they will have trouble beating teams that have a big inside presence. Could be the highest scoring team in the big ten next year.

:ill2:

The Illini Lose Warren Carter and Rich McBride. They bring back some talent in Shaun Pruitt, Jamar Smith, Chesther Frazier, and Brian Randle. Also about 2 or 3 other role players. Illinois really missed out on brining in a unbelievable recruiting class as they had Eric Gordon in the fold, and at one point many thought they were in the drivers seat for Turner and Rose. They ended up missing on all of them, but they ended up brining in 4 solid recruits, but not sure on good they are.

:ind2:

They lose Earl Calloway and Roderick Wilmont who were both solid performers, but they have guys up and coming and guys coming into to make up for the lose of them. They bring back their leading scorer and probably best big man in the Big Ten if Oden goes pro. They also have some very solid players in Armon Bassett, Ratliff, Stemler, and Shaw, but this team is going to be very young. They have Eric Gordon coming in who will probably win newcomer of the year in the big ten next year. He has a college ready body and can really score. They also have 4 4 star recruits to go with Gordon coming in. 2 wings, a PF and a c. All are undersized for the postions they are going to be looked at to play, and there is no video on scout, but they are all rated 4 stars.

:wisc2:

The Badgers lose Big Ten POY in Tucker and also lose Taylor and Chappell. Everyone else returns tho. They bring back Flowers who is going to need to step up and score some major points for them next year. They will also get Butch back. Bohannon stepped up big in the games against us last year and he has a very good shot. They bring back all their big guys inside with Drabbenhoft, Landry, and Stiemsma. Also Trevon Hughes started to get some solid pt towards the end of the season and he will be a solid backcourt guy for them next season. They are alos brining in 2 more big 4 star PF recruits. Also they are a team you can never count out with Bo Ryan on the sidelines.

At the very early stage, and really just to get some talk about the Big ten nextyear here is how I see it at this time. I have Oden leaving IMO, but Conley and Cook staying for us.

1. tOSU
2. Indiana
3. MSU
4. Purdue
5. Wisconsin
6. Illinois
7. Minnesota
8. Iowa
9. PSu
10. Michigan
11. Northwestern

Once again I would say a solid 6 teams that are staring at making the tourney, but I don't think the bottom will be as bad as it was this year with PSu, Northwestern, and Minnesota having either 2 or 3 wins.

I think next year is going to be a very young conference with some very solid upperclassmen.

I also hope next year is the first time that the Big Ten pulls out a victory in the Big Ten/ACC challenge...

IMO the story of the Big Ten is the coaching changes over the past few years.

Just three years ago it was O'Brien, Amaker, Alford, Butch, Monson and a fading Keady.

Now it is Matta, Beilein (only one of the newbies about whom I have some doubts), Lickliter, Samson, Tubby and Painter (who appears to be a gem).

Add Izzo and Ryan -who may be one of the best in the country - and you have the foundation for 8 solid programs. (Sorry Illinois fans - but Weber is to Illinois as Coker was to Miami).

Also, I think I posted in another thread (so these numbers may not be precise), but 3 years ago the Big Ten landed 4 top 100 players. Two years ago it was 13 and last year 20. And for next year of the 14 top 100 players who have committed to date 5 are going to the Big Ten. (Of course, 4 of those are to OSU.)

The competition is going to become very tough. Not a conference I would want to tackle with a Randy Ayers or Jim O'Brien.

...

I really can't add to that marvelous right up especially with regards to the individual teams. I think at this early point in time I would pick MSU as my early favorite to win it all. While I would give the Buckeyes and and to the backcourt, I think Sparty has the edge in the frontcourt along with their overall team experience.

I also think that the schedule will come into play but I believe it remains the same as it did last year so we will have two cracks at beating MSU but unfortunately only one to do in Indiana. I believe, but I'm not quite sure, then Indiana has a big JUCO player coming in along with their very good recruiting class.

With all that said, all bets are off if the big man decides to stay.

You really don't know for sure exactly who is returning to a school until after 29 Apr 07. Actually it is later than that if they don't hire an agent.

I can't think of anyone in the Big 10 who could consider leaving early except for the Ohio State guys and may be Neitzel.

I think they have until mid June to withdraw their names if they do not hire an agent.

The only other guy that I could of think of would possibly be DJ White but neither he or Neitzel are going to go any higher than mid 2nd round at best...

CB40--good work. I don't think there's any chance of White going pro. Keep in mind he's only 6-9.

They have him going 35th...

Not saying you're crazy. I'm just saying I think White will not be a good player in the NBA, and therefore that he'd be a waste of a draft pick. I'd take Landry out of Purdue any day of the week over White.

I know you're not crazy because I know that you check your facts. However, I think you know as well as I do that he will get eaten up in the NBA. In addition to Landry, I would almost take Claxton before White. At least he has some athleticism.
