A Few Observations from A-Deck

Just stopping in briefly to post this.

1. Bummer weather-wise. No way of observing the impressive endowments of female fandom yesterday.

2. Impressive how long most fans stayed in the stadium. Very few fans had left with 5 minutes left in the game. Kudos to them all.

3. Most of us seem to have missed something: we didn't just lose our head coach when Tressel left; we lost our offensive brainpower. Essentially lost both leadership and our offensive coordinator in one fell swoop. That has slowly dawned on me.

4. Lots of hot chocolate being consumed. Guy next to me was from MSU and said he thought it was a good deal at $2.50. Said the other concession prices were pretty much what he's seen at other stadiums (he seems to travel a lot to see Sparty play). Still saw very few pizzas being consumed.

5. Next up Wisconsin. Night game. I can't see the point of going to that one sober.

Edit: Forgot to say this: if you were one of the fans in the stadium who were booing, shame on you. You don't deserve to call yourself a Buckeye fan.

Oh man....never thought I would see that written.

Great point. I heard one of my favorite players said something along the lines of "just because you buy a scarlet and gray shirt doesn't mean you're a fan" when asked what he thought about the team being booed off the field at half-time..

agree 100% with him.

I stayed until the clock read 0:00, which included, of course, MSU and Cousins in the victory formation. I stayed in part because I couldn't believe what was happening offensively and I was certain it would change and OSU would win. I guess times have spoiled me.

Agreed. Good thing was, I didn't hear any boos in all of the fans around me. I was impressed--I thought for sure there would be some, given how things were going on the offensive side of the ball.

Sorry for booing but I don't think as fans and people who care that we are supposed to support bad decisions.

Come again? The first mass exodus started when MSU hit the FG with 10:30 left, the other when Joe overthrew Hall on 4th down. There were a lot of half empty sections around the stadium (and I'm not talking about the almost always empty club seats).

You could try supporting the players you "care" about.

Almost everyone is fed up with performing like that, especially when weak coaching makes it even worse. But you embarrass and infuriate your own players when you "boo the coaches". Their failures led to your boos.

This is what I saw as well. When "Go Green"... "Go White" is louder than OH....IO in the Shoe that is just a sad day in my book....

Something a lot of fans need to keep in mind during and after a game like this is how young the current team is. This season is an investment in the future. There are a lot of Freshmen and Sophomores on both sides of the ball who, while they're contributing now, are also still learning and developing. This will be a different team in late November and especially in January after bowl practices, which will be critical.

The problem with the notion that this is an investment in the future is that, other than QB, im not sure that is true. There is a lot of upper classmen (some just about to play their first game tbis year) on this team. And we are investing in a coaching staff that probably is not going to be around next year. Frankly, this year feels rudderless. While the defense is still playing inspired ball, the lack of strong coaching decisions and and a similarly lost looking offense does not make it appear as a good investment.

On the line, I'm thinking of three guys -- Norwell, Mewhort and Hall. At WR, pretty much everyone -- Spencer, Reed, Fields, Devin Smith and Philly Brown. Carlos Hyde has gotten a lot of solid reps.

On the DL, Hankins has already arrived and Bennett is looking like a future star, as does JT Moore. Roby has been a revelation and Bryant is our Star for the next two years. I'd like to see more of Shazier, but he's also going to be a good one.

So those are some of the names I'm thinking about when I say investment. You're right about the staff -- I am not at all convinced that any of the O coaches will be here next year (maybe Drayton?), and D side is up in the air also. It's also a question as to how much development is happening on the O, I'll agree. I'm assuming that at some point things get turned in the right direction. eight more weeks of what we've seen so far won't be much of a benefit.

Barnett, Bryant, Roby, Sabino, Klein, Shazier, Bellamy, Hankins, Bennett, Baldwin, Moore are all young, inexperienced, or both. Goebel, Simon and Howard are experienced but returning next year, and the last of those might not be better than Clarke, who is both

Reed, Smith, Spencer, Fields, Braxton, Hyde, Berry are all basically first year guys as serious contributors.

Norwell, Linsley, Hall are still young in their careers too.

i'm not sure how you can classify this as a QB only investment in the future.

from the September squad, only Brewster, Shugarts and Sweat graduate. Williams could get an extra year.
