A few observations after the SDSU game

Here is my take on the game. I am sure most of you guys have mentioned most of it, but here it goes.

- First I want to start off with the play of Troy. Was it pretty, absoluely not. One problem I think he is having is that the primary reciever is not getting open. When the play is called there is a primary reciever and then you have your 2nd, 3rd, and 4th options. I think he looks and then it is not there, then he panics, I think the game is moving really fast to him right now, b/c he hasnt got in a rhythm. I just hope the light goes on this week and he has a much better game.

Overall : C+ (b/c of his feet)

- The running game was available they just couldnt capitalize. At the point of attack they were very dominant, but They were just letting guys come from free from the secondary, or backside lbs. They were not getting off the man to get to the second level. It doesnt help when the safeties are only playing 8 yds. off the ball b/c they know we won't go deep, but still those blocks have to be made. I saw one time where there was a huge hole, but a safety came from underneath to make a shoestring tackle.

Overall I think they will improve, they just need to work on getting to the second level and Pitt and Wells are starting to see the cutback lanes more, they just need to hit them quicker.

I give it a C

Pass Blocking gets a B+ They are still letting some guys through that shouldnt be coming.

Overall Offense: I don't know if they were still dwelling on the Texas lost, but they just looked like they had their heads up their butts.

WHERE ARE THE BIG PLAYS?
They are nowhere to be found. I don't know if we have a single play over 40 yds. all year. I don't know why they won't run an out and up. Did you see the time when the SDSU guy jumped the out b4 Smith had even released the ball. If Ginn Fakes that and goes up the field he scores.

The rbs arent breaking open for the big plays, they arent turning little gains into big gains, I don't get it.

Also why all the drops, They have got to hold onto the ball.

EXECUTION: If they would just execute the play that was called, follow their assignments they woulod of put up 50. I think they are going to work on this and then they will be ok.

I give the overall performance a D: I know they could of played a lot better.

Defense: What do I say they are awesome. If they could of just stopped that first play they held them to under 100yds. I think this team could rival a poor NFL defense. I know that is a huge statement, but every single one of these guys is going to get drafted and there are a couple first rounders, they have speed, they fly to the ball and they tackle well. Lets just hope it continues.

Special Teams: Is once again a strong point HUU is awesome and so is Trappasso. The returners are also.

Overall Team game: I think if they can execute and come up with some big plays they are a dominant team. Lets see it put to work.

This is a problem that I see. Grad disagreed with me yesterday, and he may be right, because watching on TV, I cant really see what's happening down field everyplay. However it just looked like they ran the same pass routes all day, basically all stop and curl routes. They did it SO much, that SDSU knew out routes before we did.

Hey BMAX I also agree with you. There is no creativity in the pass routes.

I also think another problem as I mentioned in my post above is that guys are open on the other side of the field, but the game is moving way to fast for Smith right now and he needs to settle.

I don't think I have seen a post route all year, and that is any easy route for Holmes or Ginn to run against man coverage.

I would also like to see some fly patterns out of our slot guys against safeties and lbs.

I think all of my thoughts have been expressed by other posters in this thread and I only have a few things to share.

1. Iowa is for real. No matter their performance already they will be ready to play. We need to be ready not only at noon on Saturday but in practices all week.

2. What has happened to Dionte Johnson? He might not be a great receiver and blocker on certain passing plays, but why is he not leading on true running plays? I'm hopeful one of our more football knowledge members knows.

3. I hope to heck that Tressel is holding back some of the playbook. Otherwise, this may be a real long season.

This is from a thread on BN (from my father of all people). I think he pretty much nailed it. Wanna see what kinda reaction it gets over here.

Have you guys noticed a pattern with all this? The players change from year to year but the same old problems keep surfacing. Defensively again we can play with anyone in the country and that includes USC. Special teams and kicking game are again solid. But once again the offense is an absolute mystery and supposedly we have more gamebreakers than we have ever had. Can someone tell me what our offensive scheme is? Talk about a disorganized attack if you can call it an attack. Again guys this isnt a new problem - its the same old one. I don't believe its a Smith vs Zwick problem or any other personnel problem but a coaching problem. JT's offense has been awful since he has been here. Our offensive rank each year proves that. He is a fine man and a good leader but he cannot coach offense. I sure wish he would bite the bullet and bring in a good offensive coordinator or we will go through this year after year.

I don't know I don't think it is playcalling as much as it is execution.

I don't know how many drop balls, bad routes, locking on one reciever, missed blocks, bad passes or not breaking a tackle.

I don't know if you guys heard the announcers talking about it, but they said that Jim Lachey told them it was the worst week or practice that he has ever seen at tOSU. I think that these boys need a fire lit under there ass.

The only problem I see with the offense calling is no consistency, they need an identity. One second they complete a pass for 20 yards, or break a run and the next they get maybe one or two yards or lose yards. They need to be able to pick up chunks and not inches and it goes back to just not doing what they need to.

The pass routes yesterday, especially Teddy's, were sloppy at best. The out that SDSU should picked off was 90% Teddy's fault as he did not sell it off the line then broke down and rounded it off allowing the DB to cut under and make the play.

The fly patterns against safeties and LBs are difficult since we are not much if any man-to-man.

The routes are 100% irrelevant when the QB will not stay in the pocket and let the routes develop. Troy's timing is horrid right now. As someone stated above, he was waiting for the receiver to come out of breaks instead of having the ball there when the head turned.

I agree with you on the route by Teddy was horrible and a lot of his routes have been.

As I said in the post right b4 yours is basically what you said.

I just can't imagine why these guys can't get open, catch it when they are open, and hit the recievers in stride.

I think the whole offense is pressing right now and they need to just let the game come to them.

The guys need to find the holes in the zone and sit down. Holmes is definatly best at this.

hamby cheer

anybody at the game can answer this, but a previous poster said that he thought the standing o for hamby's first catch sounded pretty patronizing but from watching it on tv i thought it was purely supportive and i actually felt good for the guy. which was it?

Agreed completely. We are trying for the one-punch KO instead of getting in rhythm. On a side note, Bill Greene brought up a great point on BN$ about Alex Boone. Did anyone else see him burying people yesterday? He is ready...and he is nasty. Time to throw him into the fire IMO.

From what I heard (wasn't there myself), it was both. SOme people were trying to support him, but there was definitely that "Bronx cheer" aspect to it, especially after he had dropped one earlier.

Yes I still think our best drive was the one with him and Rehring in there. Datish is not making the key blocks, on the second level, I don't know how many I have seen him miss. Either one of these guys would be fine with me. I thought we solved this problem last year when we started Rehring.

"There's no way Iowa scores 28 on us"? Is that like," there's no way we struggle against SanDiego State"?

We have solutions to our "O' problems right on our team. Sit Smith, I love his potential, and he could still become great. Sit Smith, and just use him as a change of pace guy. Zwick is distributing the ball better and sees the field better.

Demote Ginn to 3rd wr or slot receiver. His route running needs lots of work and Gonzo runs better routes. Gonzo has better hands at the moment.

Stop the zone blocking. It's not working.

Yes, he was awesome and I agree. I think he will be one of the great ones.
