A few observations after the SDSU game

Problems on Offense, doh!

The pass routes yesterday, especially Teddy's, were sloppy at best. The out that SDSU should picked off was 90% Teddy's fault as he did not sell it off the line then broke down and rounded it off allowing the DB to cut under and make the play.

The fly patterns against safeties and LBs are difficult since we are not much if any man-to-man.

The routes are 100% irrelevant when the QB will not stay in the pocket and let the routes develop. Troy's timing is horrid right now. As someone stated above, he was waiting for the receiver to come out of breaks instead of having the ball there when the head turned.

1. Okay, the problem is sloppy routes. Why doesn't our receivers coach and offensive coordinator make it a priority and practice hard at it?

2. I sure hope the point about waiting for receivers to come out of breaks is off base. I mean, that is something you see in flag football. For crying out loud, these guys live football 24/7/365, and to think that this is the case is laughable. I am pretty sure all the off-season passing work would have solved this, or at least his middle school and high school practice.

Agreed completely. We are trying for the one-punch KO instead of getting in rhythm. On a side note, Bill Greene brought up a great point on BN$ about Alex Boone. Did anyone else see him burying people yesterday? He is ready...and he is nasty. Time to throw him into the fire IMO.
Agreed 100% - especially as Boone's position is being manned by Datish, the weak link on the line. When Boone came in during the second quarter, I thought that he'd finish the game. I tought that Boone should have been the starter from day one - let's hope that he gains the starting role soon.

"There's no way Iowa scores 28 on us"? Is that like," there's no way we struggle against SanDiego State"?

We have solutions to our "O' problems right on our team. Sit Smith, I love his potential, and he could still become great. Sit Smith, and just use him as a change of pace guy. Zwick is distributing the ball better and sees the field better.

Demote Ginn to 3rd wr or slot receiver. His route running needs lots of work and Gonzo runs better routes. Gonzo has better hands at the moment.

Stop the zone blocking. It's not working.

I agree, but it will never happen now that smith has been named.
JZ just seems like he has matured alot in the off season.
Justin also seems more confident in the shotgun were he sees the whole field instead of dropping back.
Who cares who the wideouts are, when you don't use them effectively, speed kills but I can't tell.........

anybody at the game can answer this, but a previous poster said that he thought the standing o for hamby's first catch sounded pretty patronizing but from watching it on tv i thought it was purely supportive and i actually felt good for the guy. which was it?

I stood and cheered, and it was completely in support of him. Everybody messes up. Not everybody does it on national TV. Hamby, and the rest of this team need to shake it off. Shame on anyone who cheered him in a smart ass way, or booed when things weren't going well on Saturday.

Now for some good news!

Malcolm Jenkins was solid as a starter!

Wilson got into the game!

Defense was awesome! Front four got pressure!

Roy Hall had his best game yet! And he creamed somebody on the crackback!

More Mo Wells! Eric Haw looked good and out of the doghouse!

Zwick looked sharp! And, he spread the ball around!

My critiques of the passing game:

Smith has to stop throwing the ball so hard sometimes. He needs to realize that not all passes should be thrown as hard as he can. I think doing so causes him to throw them into the dirt, as he did several times yesterday.

We've got to throw the ball down the field. I can't think of any plays yesterday when a ball passed by either Smith or Zwick traveled more than 15 yards vertically down the field. We've got to open the game up. Enough of this 3 yard out stuff, especially when it's third and 10 or longer. Actually, this is probably more of a critique of our play calling. We've just got too much talent at WR to not take advantage of it.

My critiques of the running game:

I agree with most of the analysis on Pittman, so I won't repeat it here. However, I'm not convinced that Mo Wells is the answer. He just seems to small out there, and doesn't have the super-elusiveness out there as do other effective scat-backs (e.g., Booker for Fla. St.). I'm hoping that Erik Haw is the answer, but I'm afraid that we're never going to see enough of him to know.

A final qualifier: I know this message sounds all negative, which is why I said it contained "critiques." There were many positive things I also saw, but these were simply the things I saw that I think we need to change before we think about running the table in the Big Ten.

Good to see Brandon Smith get a couple catches too. It's no secret we are thin at TE and need someone to step up.

I agree, Haw looked good and made the most of his couple touches. He earned a few more. Let's just hope he keeps practicing hard. We really could use another option at TB.

If one thing good came out of the Texas game, it was the improvement on the defensive line. They couldn't run the ball at all and the QB was running for his life on nearly every throw. It was nice seeing a 4 man rush and all 4 hit the qb :). LBs all had good games that I expect out of the top unit in the country. The secondary looked a lot better as well, except for that first play. Total domination.

On offense, obviously a work in progress. I don't think Smith was nearly as bad as everyone made it out to be. I expect a better game next week out of him. You can tell his timing was not where it was during the scUM game. One pass play in particular jumps out at me was during the second quarter where Ginn came across the middle. We ran the same play against scUM and Ginn got it in stride and had enough room to turn upfield for a large gain. This time, Smith was about a second to late on the throw and Ginn didn't have the same room to work with. I believe that this will be better against Iowa. We need the team to have a good week of practice.

I believe the biggest difference between Smith and Zwick in this offense is the running game. Zwick throws short routes as basically a running play where Smith uses his scambling ability for the same effect, tho I didn't see people screaming at Zwick everytime we throw to our "playmakers" on short out routes that go for 4 yards and no YAC.

In regards to Boone, when he was in there playing left tackle with Sims, Mangold, Downing and either Barton or Rehring, SDSU had no pressure on Troy and wholes were open for a grandmother to run through. I hope he sees more playing time, because from my excellent vantage point I have to agre that he was simply destroying his man.

Also someone mentioned "zone blocking" again. This is another in a long line of BIG mistakes by Jim Bollman, who I feel is as sub-standard a coach as you will find at any D-1 school. He has never shown any aptitude for the position hes has coaching our line or coordinating our offense. I also feel that Tressel will stay with this guy to the end, which is just going to give us plenty of these kind of things to talk about.

I have already said this but alas, a second problem with our offense is the fact that we sem to run only 10 plays at most. Every team can put 7 or 8 in the box because we only are using 10-15 yards of the field. This is not going to worry most teams. Our reluctance to stretch the field will only cause the same issues to keep arising.

Hopefully with the big 10 season quickly approaching, we ahd better get our ofense on track or we may have a repeat of last year and that I can not bear.

Ok first off, If Iowa would score 28 on us I would be really really pissed.

2nd why change the qb now, he went with Smith and that is who we stick with unless you want less of an identity for the offense, They both start so it doesnt matter if they are one two or three on the depth chart and they don't line up in the same spot.

And last I would really like to know why you think the zone blocking is not working.
