This game will be difficult for me. Some of my oldest memories involve listening to the exploits of the Dayton Flyers. I was given a radio when I was eight or nine years old and my dad built a bookshelf above my bed so I could listen to games played after my bedtime on school nights.
Junior Norris, Don "Monk" Monieke, Bill Uhl, Jim Sallee, Arlin Bockhorn... and of course, Coach Tom Blackburn. Those names were everyday words in my family and among my friends, all the more the surprising because we were all Protestants and the games between Chaminade and my high school, Fairmont, were fueled by barely suppressed religious fervor. But Protestant or Catholic, everyone in Dayton loved the Flyers.
I've lost touch with the team of late, but I'll tell you what, the Buckeyes are lucky this isn't the unfortunate Flyer team of 1962 with Roger Brown and Bill Chimilewski. That team could have given been one of the all-time great teams if they had ever been allowed to compete in the NCAAs.
My heart will be tugged in two directions on Thursday.
