Terrelle Pryor is a world class athlete in two sports ... you are not. Pryor probably has about 8,000 awards, trophies, medals, recognitions, and various other accolades, so what's one more Big Ten championship ring, more or less? Just another item for the overstuffed trophy case.

I really can't believe you just said that. Are you really equating a Big Ten championship ring, Gold Pants, and a Rose Bowl ring with the high school trophies he has? Seriously?
i think ljb's statement was made from pryor's perspective. obviously, pryor did not value the gold pants and other items like most of us think he should have or, i hope, i like he does now.

I have my bib number from the one and only (so far) full Ironman I have done on display at work. The bib numbers and other "memorabilia" from lesser races and events I have done are all sitting in a drawer in a bedside stand at home. If those items in the drawer were to somehow get lost, no biggie, but if something happend to my Ironman bid number, or the finishers medal I got for completeing the race, I'd be more than pissed. I would never sell either of those things, even if for some reason they all of a sudden became worth a lot of money.
For the record, Pryor did not sell his Rose Bowl ring, but rather his 2008 Big Ten Championship ring, his 2008 gold pants, and his Sportsmanship Award from the 2009 Fiesta Bowl.

Maybe for Terrelle Pryor, a pair of gold pants is equivalent to your memorablia from lesser races. Maybe some day Pryor will win/earn an award that will be equivalent to your Ironman bib number. I really doubt that Pryor's athletic career is over, and it is quite likely that he will win/earn something more special than a Big Ten championship ring.

There are some things that should never be for sale....
Then I sincerely hope that you are not one of those fans who would buy a pair of gold pants on eBay....

His response was great. He said he totally and completely agreed with the e mail, but that the NCAA will not be looking at it from that perspective. He said I would do anything, even break laws to help my family in crisis, but the NCAA is looking at it differently

Which is fine with me, because I was not trying to make a point around the NCAA ruling, just that we all would do similar things if faced with family needs

Your post was excellent. I'm still very disappointed with a team leader doing this.

My wife had 600 trophies when she twirled the baton. How much were they worth to her? She didn't keep a single one. The point is sometimes these things have more value to the parents and fans than to the athlete.
Especially if the athlete has many trophies.

Exactly! And sadly, the truth of the matter.

I am all for suspending them for the bowl game.

Auburn basically pushed the ncaa to make a decision on Cam. I would be fine if tOSU just pushed back and started the punishment right now. Maybe its not fair to the other players but it is the right thing to do.

Its ridiculous to think that they are not serving their suspension right now. I wonder how many college football and basketball jerseys have been sold and not reported? Hundreds.....thousands.

The bad thing about all this is now the ncaa is going to push these players to the nfl and they certainly are not ready for that.

Again how many times has this happened and not been reported. Georgia and tOSU are a few schools that are crazy enough to self report.

Go Bucks

Yeah - that's the problem that Mili and I and a bunch of other Buckeyes have with it.

I blame RichRod. If Michigan wasn't terrible, beating them would mean more to the players on the field. Us fans love it. Maybe to some of the players that were 6 years old when scUM was kicking our ass it just doesnt mean as much.

Maybe he was a freshman that didn't appreciate it fully yet.
Maybe he doesn't need a trinket, or doesn't like jewelry.
Maybe a photo or a DVD is how he'd prefer to remember it.

Maybe he uses his memory to remember it.

All games but Miami in C-bus. Knowing who is out in the first 5 games is key to replacing those guys. The biggest temporary loss is TP. But, realistically it's time for the "next guy" to step up. If we get just consistent play from the QB position we could win all those games.

I think everyone whose greatest problem is with what was sold should develop a list of personal and team-related awards, along with clear prioritization of importance to you, personally. Then all the players can be expected to place the same priority on their awards as we fans do. And if any of them needs to part with them (after their eligibility is exhausted, of course), we can expect them to be sold in the reverse order of priority that we place upon them. If they're sold in the improper order, we are then accordingly empowered to dump derision and scorn upon them.

No doubt. The school can give the players gold medalions and conference championship rings because they are football players, but they can not receive special perks from boosters because they are football players. They also can go to a bowl and receive hundreds of dollars worth of swag because they are football players.

They get more than that. One of my former athletes was an outstanding high jumper for Purdue. He received a watch after winning the event at the conference meet. Other gifts from the conference to football and basketball players included DVD players, i-pods and TVs.

The "amateur" status line in the NCAA comments really tickles. They must still be living in the Cold War days when Soviet soldiers were "amateurs" despite the fact that they lived rather well off (for Soviets). And God forbid we should do anything that would keep these athletes from the "pure competition" of the Olympics and sully the reputation of Olympic officials.

Can the players still sell the game tickets they receive? Are their restrictions on what they can ask for those tickets? Back in my early days at OSU a certain player on the basketball team had a stack of student activity cards (at least 40 or 50) that he 'borrowed" and then refused to return and made quite a bit of money selling the cards for individual games. It didn't hurt that Lucas and Havelicek played on the team with him.
