5 players suspended for 5 games in 2011 regular season (Appeal has been denied)

Regarding the Cam Newton parallels:

The ruling on Newton, if I understand it correctly, was that there was no evidence that he personally knew of the pay-to-play scheme, and it was a compliance ruling, not an eligibility ruling.

Within the NCAA, compliance and eligibility are two very different things, handled by two different departments.

The Cam Newton eligibility investigation is not over. So Newton is eligible. For now.

There is a strong belief in the SEC that the other shoe will drop sooner or later when the eligibility investigation is completed.

I doubt it effects Newton personally, as he is out the door after the NC game, but Auburn is still very much on the hook.

If they beat Oregon, don't be surprised to see the win vacated at some point in the future. Auburn is a very, very dirty program and has been since forever.

The NCAA decided to let Newton play - innocent until proven guilty, America, and all that.

The NCAA has also decided to let tOSU 5 play. For now. Because of how tOSU handled tattoo-gate, they are in full compliance with the NCAA. And because there is evidently no on-going investigation, the eligibility investigation is settled, thus, the ruling on forfeiting 5 games next season.

The NCAA protected Auburn, OSU (and the money involved) by letting everyone in question play through the season.

The good news for tOSU is that there doesn't seem to be an ongoing investigation - the matter looks to be closed - and the dreaded 'lack of institutional control' isn't at stake. tOSU will take its medicine and move on. Losing 5 big-time players for 5 games - or forever if they go pro - will hurt, but it's not a program crippling deal.

That does not apply to the Auburn/Newton situation. If, as everyone expects once the Newton saga is all said and done, Auburn is likely to get hit with USC/Bush level sanctions. And they will deserve it.

Yes, colleges and others make a ton of money. But, they also make a considerable investment. I don't have a problem with them making money off it. That money is - to my knowledge - funneled back into the university. That is to say, Ohio State University does not operate for profit. They provide opportunity.[/quote]

here is an interesting article that pertains to our conversation. its coming from somebody who has good knowledge of the situation even though gary williams is a bball coach.

This is disappointing on so many levels, not least that so many posters I respect seem so willing to sever all ties with the offenders. If they had committed the offense this week, as juniors, I might feel the same way. But they committed the offense when they were FRESHMEN(!!) Pryor has admitted he was a punk back then; but he has matured (albeit, still has a way to go). Adams was going through personal hell back then (has he matured at all?).

To me, the punishment seems about right, including the opportunity to appeal (not sure about the bowl game; that seems to serve only the NCAA's interest). To me, the key is whether they can learn and grow from this. That cannot be known at this time.

I hope the appeal gets the number of games dropped to four. I'd like to have them all back - assuming they stay in school - for the entire conference schedule. That's all I ask from it.

We'll take our medicine and move forward.

Go Bucks!

still very disappointed, from what I can tell, it's official these guys are playing in the Sugar Bowl. Really, no good comes from it.

  • We win, and are called out for the 5 future suspended players
  • We lose with the 5 players, and are ripped for losing to the SEC again
Is there any reason Tressel couldn't suspend them himself, and then use his own suspension as part of the appeal case?

I don't know...I'd rather lose with "clean" players than win with "dirty" players.

And the Mike Adams tweet/quote just screams..."I don't understand the severity of this" to me.

Extremely disappointing.
