They were allowed by tOSU to play in a BCS game (tOSU's win only assured in the last minute by the significant participation of several of the athlete violators) because their suspensions were put off until the 2011 season.

While I think you and are are more of a like mind on this than Max you seem to be conflating the NCAA's punishment & the school's punishment.

The NCAA suspensions for next season were not in any way affected by whether or not the players agreed to come back.

If Coach Tressel & the University had just gone with the NCAA sanctions they could have played all five with absolutely no ramifications if the players decided to leave school for the NFL prior to 2011-12.

If the school had decided to disallow the players' participation in the Sugar Bowl it also would not have affected the five game suspensions for next season (although I'm sure Ohio State would have lobbied to reduce the NCAA's suspensions due to the school's additional suspension).

Their suspensions were not 'put off'. The school decided not to impose additional suspensions based to the players' subsequent actions (apologizing and agreeing to return).

I also think its interesting how so many talking heads were discussing how they were going to go pro, despite giving their word to tressel. That they wouldn't serve any punishment at all.

I realize there are still a few hours left, and I hope no one makes a fool outta me, but they're all still coming back right?

Shove that up your microphone, ESPiN!

I wouldn't gloat yet, but yes, I haven't heard any of them declaring.

Disagree 100%.

JT's pledge was a brilliant move in the face of heavy fire for allowing them to play.

He put it all on the individuals. You only play if you promise to return and endure your punishment.

If any player leaves, the majority of the heat falls on the player...JT comes across as at worst...naive.

I think you have that one dead right, Grad21. If they gave a pledge and they leave, it will be something long remembered about them, not Tressel. After all, no pledge was necessary by the NCAA. They were clear to play. If they decided to leave later, the NCAA had no recourse or interest. Rules are rules.

The deadline to declare for the NFL Draft has passed, so all 5 must be returning for 2011.

I actually woke up this morning, dreaming that I was shaking JT's hand and saying "The fact that all 5 guys are coming back makes me proud to be a Buckeye." (I'm assuming an earlier REM cycle had something involving Jessica Alba.)

And after all of the snickering, speculating, and mudslinging done by several talking heads at ESPN, they'll hardly bother to mention the fact that each player will serve a full suspension in 2011; because pointing out that a promise made to JT has real meaning carries no value toward their agenda, while keeping any negative about tOSU in the news cycle for as long as possible seems to suit them just fine.

I meant that earlier I must have had a dream involving myself and Jessica Alba.

For you to twist that to say it was something with her and JT makes me think that you work for ESPN. :shake:
