THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Ohio State had the party started. Twenty points ahead at halftime, dancing all over Michigan State inside and out, showing off all of its assets to a sold-out crowd and a prime-time audience on ESPN2.
Then Drew Neitzel crashed it, and almost spoiled it.
Almost.
The Spartans? irrepressible guard scored 24 of his 29 points in the second half last night to rally Michigan State almost all the way back from a seemingly insurmountable halftime deficit. But the Spartans, who were as close as one point with 1:41 left, missed three potential winning shots in the final 69 seconds and the fifth-ranked Ohio State men?s basketball team won 66-64 in Value City Arena.

I don't want to hear this "A win is a win" or "No win is a bad win" shit, because that's what that is...shit. Granted, we probably shouldn't have been up by 20 at the half seeing as we shot the lights out from behind the arc (you can't always count on that), but there is no excuse for any team--any team--coming back on you from 20 down at the half on your home floor to have the potential winning shot hit your rim at the buzzer.
Well come ranking time, the AP or other experts dont really look at how you win, just if you win. But I understand what you are saying, for OSU, this was a bad win, but ranking wise, a win is a win.

Buckeyes nearly blow big lead

OSU finally able to beat Michigan State at home

By Marla Ridenour

Beacon Journal sportswriter

COLUMBUS - Michigan State had won the past four games at Value City Arena. So even when Ohio State held a 20-point lead at halftime, only the most optimistic Buckeyes fan figured it could be this easy.
The pessimists were right.
OSU freshman center Greg Oden hit the second of two free throws with 15.3 seconds left. MSU's Maurice Joseph then missed a 3-point try from the top of the key with one second remaining, and the Buckeyes' Othello Hunter rebounded after the buzzer as the No. 5 Buckeyes hung on for a 66-64 victory Saturday night.

Columbus- Ohio State just had too big of a head start.

"That was a tale of two halves," Ohio State coach Thad Matta said. "The first half we played some great basketball. But Michigan State didn't go away."

Yep, risky but doubling Neitzel at that point made sense and it got the necessary result which was a miss. Game over.

It never makes sense to double team a perimeter shooter who is no threat to drive. One defender to put a hand in his face is enough. The other guy doesn't add anything.

I don't agree, Neitzel scored 24 points in the second half with just single coverage. Everyone in the arena knew who wanted the ball. I will go with Matta on this one, keep the ball out of his hands and let someone else take the shot. Neitzel was killing us with penetration all night, not sure what you are basing your comment on.

I agree. Neitzel was hitting everything. Matta said he can't remember anything like it and I agree. The key is to make sure he doesn't get into a rhythm like that in East Lansing.

I'm with Sushi, he creeped me out. That psycho, British-Nazi, skinhead look belongs back in the 1980s!

You obviously didn't watch the game. Skinhead was red-hot and was the guy who literally single-handedly brought them back...having one guy on him wasn't working. The other MSU shooters weren't hitting from outside the arc, so that was the best plan (keeping skinhead fromtaking the shot and making someone else take it). Of course, we never should've been in that position in the first place.
