High School 2nd Annual Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Classic (2006)

All I know is Ohio is taking on some of the nations best and we are holding our own and I am very proud the way we have played.

St.X vs Lakeland. Lost in OT after throwing an INT. Curious to as why they coach would be throwing, but great job,

Moeller vs Byrnes. Lost in the last seconds 21-20. They will be disappointed in the way they lost this game after controlling 90% of this game.

St Eds is destroying a the Arkansas team

Hillard won

Findlay is way down and got beat bad... Way to represent Ohio even with some tough loses. I think there are very few states that have the type of HS football we have here.

Just got back from Nippert and Centerville lost to Don Bosco Prep. It was 21-0 when I left but Centerville really did play them tough. Trattou is an absolute beast and he is a DT all the way. He was in the backfield on the run all day and had at least one sack. Simms really didn't look all to great but not horrible. An underclassmen that really stuck out for Don Bosco was # 19. He is 6-2 215 and can fly. He plays LB and RB but looks more likely to play LB. I'll get my friends program to give a name. For Centerville, Replogle was dominant. Indiana got one heck of a football player and his potential has met up with his play. Overall I think the Ohio teams repped pretty well.

TV Replay has confirmed what everyone in the stadium already knew: Byrnes' last EP attempt was at least a foot wide, some have said 3 feet wide. Refs were clueless and said it was good, the Moeller players immediately protested to them to no avail. It's a shame, Moeller's boys got the shaft today after playing their hearts out. Questionable decision to kick a long field goal on 4th and a foot inside Brynes' 30 on Moeller's last chance with roughly 40-50 seconds left too, with a very inconsistent kicker who has now missed 3 EP on the season if I'm not mistaken.

The X game was heart-breaking, that's pretty much the only way to describe it as a member of the St. X community. The team absolutely played their hearts out, with the defense showing they have a lot of fight in them by coming up with big stops at times despite being seemingly physically overmatched by Lakeland's offense in the 2nd half.

Ryan Morris missed open recievers in the end zone twice on X's last drive in regulation, forcing them to settle for the tying FG. Bonehead of the game has to go to X's OC though, calling the pass only needing a FG to tie in OT. They threw to the end zone on the first play and got it picked off. Darius Ashley had really shown a lot in the 2nd half, and I think you go to him 3 times in a row there. Starting at the 20, it's a 37 yarder (which we're very lucky to be able to consider almost automatic with Danny Milligan kicking) if we don't get any positive yardage (highly unlikely), and if he busts one open we win. I'm far more comfortable with the ball in Darius' hands than anyone elses in that situation. Regardless, the kids all played their hearts out and I'm proud to be a Bomber. There were a lot of lockers punched and things thrown in the locker room after the game, along with players having to console many teammates who were crying.

In the end I think this loss will be good for this team, although it certainly wasn't necessary and sucks. As Coach pointed out after the game, none of the players on our team this year had lost a varsity game, and now they know how that feels. They know what losing feels like now, and anyone in that locker room can tell you they never want to feel that again and have teammates crying on their shoulders. This lit a fire under their asses, and I just feel bad for Covington Catholic, who has to play them this Friday.

Wow that EP was no way good..... St.X has a right to be pissed but no way should these kids hold their heads down. I think everyone in Ohio is proud the way the kids played throughout this great tournament and represented this state in a great way. Hats off to all the players, coaches, sponsors, and fans.

MASSILLON - History was on the side of the Massillon high school football team Saturday night.
So was a resilience that can only be born out of tradition and heart. The newcomers from Arizona probably had never seen anything like it.
Massillon made big play after big play and contained an explosive Hamilton offense for a 35-26 win during the McDonald?s Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge before 10,500 fans at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium.
The Tigers? minds weren?t even totally on football.
Senior Martel Carpenter, a backup tight end-linebacker, was in a car crash early Saturday that killed his brother. Martel Carpenter is in serious condition at Aultman Hospital.
?It?s tough enough on adults ... I don?t know how our guys did it,? Massillon coach Tom Stacy said. ?We really feel for Martel and his family. Obviously, our prayers are with him.?
The Tigers found it somewhere to pull out a win they?ll be talking about for a while in Massillon. Brian Gamble, Bobby Huth and Bryan Sheegog where big on offense, while Andrew Dailey, Antonio Scassa and Emery Saunders led an outstanding defensive effort.
Gamble rushed for 159 yards and a TD on 35 carries and caught two touchdowns passes from Huth.
?He made big plays all night,? said Hamilton coach Steve Belles, whose team started its program in 1998, compared to 1894 for Massillon. ?And it wasn?t all long runs. It was just tough, Midwest football.?
Hamilton, which entered the game ranked 11th nationally by USA Today, seemed to be in control late in the first half. By the end of the night, the Huskies looked out of sorts, dropping passes, turning the ball over and committing penalties.
The game changed late in the first half.
Gamble, who had fumbled earlier in the second quarter, intercepted a pass near midfield and returned it to the Hamilton 20. He then took a pass from Bobby Huth and shook off a defender for a 10-yard TD play with 8 seconds left.
Instead of going into half down 17-7, the Tigers trailed by 3.
The momentum carried over.
After Saunders recovered a fumbled snap, Huth hit Bryan Sheegog on 29-yard TD pass up the right sideline for a lead Massillon never relinquished.
Next, it was Dailey?s turn for a big play. The linebacker picked a pass off in the left flat and returned it 19 yards for a TD with 1:25 left in the third.
After a three-and-out by the Huskies, Massillon took complete control with a six-play, 77-yard drive. Gamble started it with a 43-yard run and ended it with a 21-yard TD catch from Huth, putting Massillon up, 35-20.
Hamilton scored on a 4-yard TD pass to J.T. Dixon with 1:13 left, but Scassa and Saunders teamed to stuff a 2-point try by Brad Gruner to effectively end it.
Moments after Hamilton entered the field waving the Arizona state flag, the two teams provided some fireworks to start the game.
Sheegog hauled in a beautiful 66-yard tailback pass Gamble to get to Hamilton?s 1 on the Tigers? second play from scrimmage. Two plays later, Gamble leaped in for a 7-0 lead with just 10:08 left.
Hamilton wasted no time responding. Huskies QB Brad Gruner hit Kerry Taylor for a 66-yard TD on their first play.
Massillon buckled down and played gritty defense from there.
It was frustrating when they made those big plays, but that?s all they got,? Dailey said. ?I think we went out tonight with a little bit more of a swagger than we?ve had in the past, and a little bit more umph and fire.?
St. Edward 49, Springdale (Ark.) 3
St. Edward jumped out to a 42-0 halftime lead and rolled past Springdale.
Ohio State-recruit Nate Oliver, who had a 46-yard punt return and 26-yard interception return for touchdowns, was named game MVP. Frank Edmonds ran for 129 yards and three TDs on 18 carries.
Hilliard Davidson 17, Philadelphia St. Joseph 14
Hilliard Davidson QB Connor Dietze?s 6-yard TD run with 3:22 left proved to be the game-winner in the Wildcats? victory over St. Joseph Prep. St. Joseph, ranked sixth in the East according to USA Today?s regional rankings, missed a 24-yard field goal with 4 seconds left that would have sent the game to overtime. Dietz finished with 48 yards rushing and a 5-yard TD pass to Bo Delande.

De La Salle triumps in Ohio De La Salle roars back among nation's elite
Spartans blast to 49-18 lead, then cruise by top Ohio team
By Curtis Pashelka, MEDIANEWS

CINCINNATI ? One might look back at what happened on Saturday as the night Mike MacGillivray established himself as a premier dual-threat quarterback. Or the night John Hendershott showed he may be almost uncoverable. More likely, though, Saturday may better remembered as the night the De La Salle High School football team re-established itself as one of the nation's best.
Taking on an unbeaten Elder-Cincinnati team in front of about 10,000 fans at Nippert Stadium, the Spartans scored 28 unanswered points late in the second and third quarters to help earn a 56-38 win in the finale of the Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge.
MacGillivray was named the game's MVP after rushing for four touchdowns and throwing two others, as the Spartans earned what may have been their most impressive road win in recent memory.
Longer-than-normal road trips have not been kind to De La Salle since the start of the 2004 season, as the team has endured losses to Bellevue (Wash.), Clovis West and Mission Viejo.
But those frustrations became a distant memory against Elder, as MacGillivray rushed for three touchdowns in the first half to help De La Salle take a 28-12 lead.
MacGillivray had touchdown runs of 47, 30, 21 and 5 yards, and completed two touchdown passes to tight end Albert Rosette, the second of which gave De La Salle a 49-18 lead with 38 seconds to go in the third quarter. Hendershott also finished with six catches for 107 yards.
De La Salle came in as the fifth-ranked team in the country by StudentSports.com and the No. 1 team in the state by CalHiSports.com. It openedthe season last week with a workmanlike 40-28 win over Serra-San Mateo, leading to questions as to whether De La Salle deserved its lofty ranking. Even a Cincinnati newspaper said no one should be surprised if Elder pulled out the win Saturday.
But those thoughts went out the window midway through the second quarter. After the Panthers scored two consecutive touchdowns to cut De La Salle's lead to 14-12, Ryan Nastor returned the ensuing kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown. Two minutes later, MacGillivray scored on a 47-yard keeper.
Elder showed in its first three games that it could move the ball, putting up big numbers both passing and running. The Panthers outscored their first three opponents, which included two of the top five teams in Kentucky, 76-28.
Elder coach Doug Ramsey said earlier this week that his team wasn't going to be in awe of De La Salle. The Panthers have a 97-27 record in the last 10-plus years, which includes state titles in 2002 and 2003, and have 515 wins in the school's 86-year history.
The Panthers also have some of the most devoted fans in Ohio. Their stadium, nicknamed "The Pit," is regularly filled to its 10,000-seat capacity. But the Panthers crowd on Saturday, which began filtering out midway through the fourth quarter, was rarely a factor.
