Challenge may yield 'greatest' weekend of high school football

CENTERVILLE — The only hits delivered Wednesday at The Golf Club at Yankee Trace were by golf clubs against golf balls. But the prospect of this fall's McDonald's Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge made football coaches feel like linebackers.
"I think that's the cool thing — to see it all materialize," said Herbstreit, a Centerville native and an ABC/ESPN analyst. "It's one thing to look at the matchups on paper and say, 'Wow, this is going to be a great game.'
"To finally meet the guys and find out how excited they are about getting involved, I think that's the thing that's been the most flattering and exciting."
The nine-game high school football event at Cincinnati's Nippert Stadium and Massillon's Paul Brown Tiger Stadium is Sept. 15-16. Visit www.usavsohio.com for the schedule, ticket prices and information.
Most schools' coaches and athletic directors saw a Cincinnati Reds game Tuesday, played in a golf scramble Wednesday and talked a little football. A 90-minute television preview aired on ONN — a program that will be repeated leading up to the event.
Colerain won the feature game during last year's first Challenge, a 27-12 victory against Texas school Tyler Lee at Crew Stadium.
This year's event will showcase more than 100 NCAA Division I recruits and several nationally ranked teams.
"This is the single greatest weekend of high school football probably in the history of the country," Colerain coach Kerry Coombs said. "We are bringing together teams that I have read about and seen on ESPN.
Just curious what Moeller has next year and if they will actually be able to put up a good game against Lakeland.
Lakeland finished the season ranked one or two in the country last year.
I believe this is where Chris Rainey (07RB recruit) attends school.
Also there were reports that their d-line kicked the crap out of Sam Young and Wenger(Sp?), I think that is St. Thomas Aquanis, but not sure.
I believe their whole d-line comes back to.
Personaly, as a retired teacher and coach ( Moeller track and CC) I think this is a real mistake. It distorts the purpose of school way beyond what competitive athletics have already done.
The game last year was great leading into the OSU/Texas game. Any reason they didn't schedule a game in Crew Stadium (or anywhere else in Columbus) this year?
Not enough people in Columbus care about HS football, that's the bottom line...if you can't sell the tickets the game can't make money. Even the teams with the best support in Central Ohio are pathetic compared to the big Cincy and NEO time...
What Herbie was saying on the radio was that he wanted it to be closer to the "hotbeds" of HS Football, of which Columbus was not.
