High School 2nd Annual Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Classic (2006)

As you all know, I have strong ties to the Colerain football program. It was interesting to look up some information on Cardinal O'Hara from Springfield (Homer Simpson as the head coach??) PA. Looks to be a rather large school as they participate in every sport under the sun. RB Kevin Jones is an Alumn of the school. Colerain, as will the rest of the Ohio schools, has their work cut out for them.

Ohio battles nation in 'Herbstreit' challenge

Top high school football teams clash in September

By Mark Gokavi
Dayton Daily News
We'll see just how big and bad Ohio high school football is when it goes nationwide.
<!--endtext-->
In the second annual Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge, many arguments will be settled on the field, not in some poll.
<!-- inset --> <!--begintext--> Some of Ohio's best will be tested by well-known teams from Texas, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Florida, New Jersey, California, Arkansas and Arizona.
"That's a big part of the fun, to find out how does Ohio stack up against some of the national powers," Herbstreit said Wednesday. "We're going to find out."
There are 10 games (including an all-Ohio matchup) Sept. 15 and 16, with six games at Cincinnati's Nippert Stadium and four at Kent State's Dix Stadium.
Herbstreit, a Centerville native and analyst on ESPN's College GameDay, put his alma mater on the schedule next to many strong Ohio teams. The Elks will face Don Bosco Prep from Ramsey, N.J.
"I think they have a pretty good tradition," the ex-Ohio State quarterback said. "It's not just a Cincinnati vs. USA event.
"The goal was to try to get the entire state represented. That's why as this goes in '06 and '07 and beyond, Northmont will (be) in this. Wayne will probably be involved in this."

It would be cool to keep one of the games for the smaller schools. I would love to see St Henry, Coldwater, or Versailles get a chance to be in something like this.

Is St X's "D" going to be near what it was last year?. If so, then should be a great game.

Challenge may yield 'greatest' weekend of high school football

By Mark Gokavi
Staff Writer

CENTERVILLE — The only hits delivered Wednesday at The Golf Club at Yankee Trace were by golf clubs against golf balls. But the prospect of this fall's McDonald's Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge made football coaches feel like linebackers.

"I think that's the cool thing — to see it all materialize," said Herbstreit, a Centerville native and an ABC/ESPN analyst. "It's one thing to look at the matchups on paper and say, 'Wow, this is going to be a great game.'

"To finally meet the guys and find out how excited they are about getting involved, I think that's the thing that's been the most flattering and exciting."

The nine-game high school football event at Cincinnati's Nippert Stadium and Massillon's Paul Brown Tiger Stadium is Sept. 15-16. Visit www.usavsohio.com for the schedule, ticket prices and information.

Most schools' coaches and athletic directors saw a Cincinnati Reds game Tuesday, played in a golf scramble Wednesday and talked a little football. A 90-minute television preview aired on ONN — a program that will be repeated leading up to the event.

Colerain won the feature game during last year's first Challenge, a 27-12 victory against Texas school Tyler Lee at Crew Stadium.

This year's event will showcase more than 100 NCAA Division I recruits and several nationally ranked teams.

"This is the single greatest weekend of high school football probably in the history of the country," Colerain coach Kerry Coombs said. "We are bringing together teams that I have read about and seen on ESPN.

Just curious what Moeller has next year and if they will actually be able to put up a good game against Lakeland.

Lakeland finished the season ranked one or two in the country last year.

I believe this is where Chris Rainey (07RB recruit) attends school.

Also there were reports that their d-line kicked the crap out of Sam Young and Wenger(Sp?), I think that is St. Thomas Aquanis, but not sure.

I believe their whole d-line comes back to.

Moeller will be a solid GCL team, but nothing like the Moeller of the 70's and 80s. St X is another story.

Personaly, as a retired teacher and coach ( Moeller track and CC) I think this is a real mistake. It distorts the purpose of school way beyond what competitive athletics have already done.

But plenty of teams in Ohio already play out-of-state opponents, often out of necessity. St. X and St. Edward's often have a hard time making a ten-game schedule because of scheduling problems, and Iggy has had to play teams from NY, IN, DC, etc...to fill out their schedule. It really only boils down to one huge game out of the year for each school. Instead of Moeller playing a Lousiville team (which they do just about every year), they will be playing a bigger national power. Not sure that it really adds to any problems with HS athletics. It is a consolidation of games into one "event." There are already some sixty or more HS football games played by Ohio teams against non-Ohio teams every year. This just happens to be well-organized.

I agree, in general, that HS games shouldn't be on ESPN2.

I personally love it. I love any bigtime football games and the upper-level teams in HS in the country matching up fits the bill. All the players love it too. I have a friend playing in one game and they are pumped for it. I'm going to try and catch most of the Saturday games, especially St. X vs. Lakeland.

The game last year was great leading into the OSU/Texas game. Any reason they didn't schedule a game in Crew Stadium (or anywhere else in Columbus) this year?

Not enough people in Columbus care about HS football, that's the bottom line...if you can't sell the tickets the game can't make money. Even the teams with the best support in Central Ohio are pathetic compared to the big Cincy and NEO time...

wow, this has grown quite a bit from the single match up they put on last year.

The only thing I don't like about it is they wait till the following season when the teams lose all of their seasons. To really know who the best is, they need to put the game on right after the season ends. i know that will never happened but just saying.

I agree also that HS football support from Central Ohio is nothing compared to NE Ohio. I am originally from Youngstown and HS football was huge there. But on the same note, there was no Ohio State which is what I believe draws attention for HS football in Columbus.

What Herbie was saying on the radio was that he wanted it to be closer to the "hotbeds" of HS Football, of which Columbus was not.

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense. I was one of the people who was disappointed with last year's attendance. It was an awesome game though.
