Everybody is somebody else's weirdo.
2026 World Cup coming to U.S., Mexico, Canada as joint bid wins vote

The United States might not be participating in the World Cup, but it pulled off a historic victory in Russia all the same: The globe's biggest sporting event is returning to the U.S.

In a long-anticipated vote on Wednesday, the joint bid of the U.S., Mexico and Canada defeated Morocco, its only challenger, as 200 national soccer federations cast their ballots to cap FIFA's annual Congress.

The three-nation bid captured 134 votes, with Morocco earning 65 from the panel and only Iran choosing neither option. Cuba, Slovenia and Spain (whose delegation was in Krasnodar, Russia, handling its coaching situation) abstained.

"This is an incredible, and incredibly important, moment for soccer in North America and beyond," said Carlos Cordeiro, the president of U.S. Soccer.

The 2026 tournament will feature an expanded field of 48 teams -- the current field has 32 -- and will mark the first time in FIFA's history that a three-nation bid has been awarded the showpiece event.

The joint bid's plans call for 60 of the 80 games to be played in the United States -- including all matches from the quarterfinals onward -- while Canada and Mexico host 10 apiece. The final is expected to be played at MetLife Stadium, just outside New York.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino, right, congratulates the presidents of the three United bid federations.

The tournament will be the first World Cup in the United States since 1994, and bid organizers frequently highlighted the importance of hosting a World Cup as a way to mark and push the expansion of the sport in the U.S.

Projected bench: (Goalkeepers) Matt Turner, Chris Brady; (Defenders) Alex Freeman, Mark McKenzie, Auston Trusty, Miles Robinson, Max Arfsten; (Midfielders) Aiden Morris, Cristian Roldan, Sebastian Berhalter, Malik Tillman, Brendan Aaronson, Gio Reyna; (Forwards) Ricardo Pepi, Haji Wright

Squad snapshot: Previous World Cups have seen the U.S. strong in goal and defense, but light in attack. In this edition, the opposite appears to be true.

Questions abound in goal, as well as the center of defense, with Ream, 38, still penciled in to start despite questions about his mobility. In attack, for the first time in over a decade, the U.S. have a standout striker in Balogun with the likes of Pulisic, McKennie and Weah charged with getting him the ball -- or creating opportunities for themselves.

The U.S. certainly have more attacking options than they're used to. That includes full backs Robinson and Dest, who will be critical to the USMNT's attack, with Robinson providing service from out wide and Dest taking on the role of attacking wild card. Therefore, the center of midfield will be key in helping to shield the backline with Adams providing the steel and Cardoso (if he can get fit) the cultured passing.

The intangibles settle on the fact that the U.S. are playing at home. Will the USMNT use the home crowd to spur it on, or will the weight of expectations prove to be too heavy? It will be up to manager Mauricio Pochettino to make sure the team is prepared and possesses a confident mindset.

United States 2026 World Cup Preview: Golden Generation Eyes American History

The U.S. made a round of 16 exit the last time it hosted the World Cup, but this time, it has the superstar talent to mount a more impressive run—if the team plays to its potential.

Arguably the most talented U.S. men’s national team of all time arrives to the World Cup stage desperate to put on a show on home soil.

The Stars and Stripes might have automatically qualified for this summer’s tournament as hosts, but it more than earned the right to compete alongside the top 48 teams in the world. Oozing with talent and rejuvenated under the leadership of Mauricio Pochettino, the USMNT hope to pull off a storybook run in front of home crowds across the country.

Having never won a World Cup, the “golden generation” of American soccer players, led by AC Milan standout Christian Pulisic, kicks off its mighty quest on June 12 at SoFi Stadium, where a statement performance could set the tone for the host nation.

World Cup Schedule
Fixture Date Venue
USMNT vs. Paraguay Friday, June 12 SoFI Stadium
USMNT vs. Australia Friday, June 19 Lumen Field
Türkiye vs. USMNT Thursday, June 25 SoFI Stadium

Manager: Mauricio Pochettino

  • World Cup experience: Managerial debut
  • Time in charge of the team: Since 2024
  • Manager meter: Under pressure
Mauricio Pochettino’s résumé at club level is as impressive as it is extensive, but managing the likes of Tottenham, Chelsea and PSG is nothing like taking over an underwhelming USMNT side with the threat of a looming World Cup on home soil.

Even the Argentine’s best tactics might not be enough to get a team of individuals up to the level needed to succeed this summer, especially given the competitive nature of Group D.

And Finally ...

  • Vibe Check: Hopeful
  • Who USMNT Doesn't Want to Face: Mexico
  • One Stat That Defines USMNT: Just four clean sheets in the last 19 matches played points to ongoing inconsistency
  • If Things Go Wrong: Blame will fall on Pochettino for failing to get the best out of the country’s golden generation
  • What Will Everyone Say If the USMNT Goes Out Early? America embarrassed at the biggest World Cup ever

Granted, I wasnt going to watch it anyways, but I'm so grateful that Chicago is missing out on being part of this shitshow. Only good part of the world cup is if the English fans lay waste to some host city.

Detroit should be perma host for all England games. Play the motherfucker in the Big House for the cosmic win.

The thought of a drunken/high/violent mob of English soccer fans laying waste to Ann Arbor warms me way down in the frozen parts of my soul.
