Larry Black, Michigan’s new defensive tackles coach, wants his group to play with an edge, and he has his own way of communicating the goal. Michigan’s players have been learning the lingo so far in preseason camp.
“He brought a mentality to the D-line,” said Trey Pierce, one of Michigan’s four team captains. “He brought that gritty, scummy cat mentality he wants us to have.”
What is a scummy cat?
“When you’re on the D-line, you’re in there fighting,” Pierce said. “It’s a fight every play. You go into a street fight, it’s hard to beat a guy who’s gritty, who’s scummy.”
