  • Day said Ohio State will “try to create situations” to test Baylor transfer kicker Connor Hawkins this preseason. Day wants Hawkins to have moments where he’s thrown in the fire. “You don’t get to go to the driving range when you’re on the back nine.”
  • Day said “physically we look as good as we have” this preseason. He said the Buckeyes are as talented as they’ve been, too, but need to work hard this August and September to set the standard for the year.

Ohio State Practice Observations: Austin Siereveld Starts Camp at Right Guard, Isaiah West and Ja’Kobi Jackson Make Move at Running Back and Chris Henry Jr., Devin McCuin Stand Out at Wide Receiver​

For at least the first day of preseason camp, Ohio State’s first-team offensive line looked like it was expected to look.

Ian Moore manned the left tackle position while Austin Siereveld, who started at left tackle in 2025, began camp at right guard. Left guard Luke Montgomery, center Carson Hinzman and right tackle Phillip Daniels all started camp in the same positions they played for the Buckeyes last season.

Ryan Day said after practice that Ohio State is “gonna try a couple different combinations” on the offensive line this spring, another of which is expected to include Joshua Padilla getting reps at right guard with Siereveld moving back to tackle. Ultimately, Day said, Ohio State’s objective is to determine the best five on the offensive line, with Daniels, Moore and Padilla all still competing to be part of that five alongside Siereveld, Montgomery and Hinzman.

That said, it’s been widely expected since spring that Siereveld – who was sidelined for the second half of spring due to a lower-body surgery – would move back to guard, the position he previously played in his first two years at Ohio State, if Moore continued to look the part of a starting left tackle. After one day of preseason camp, it only appears more likely that Siereveld will move back inside this season with Moore taking over as Julian Sayin’s blind-side protector.

Additional notes​

  • Brandon Inniss, Brock Boyd, Phillip Bell and De’zie Jones all took reps at punt returner during the special teams portion of practice. Jeremiah Smith also stood with the punt returners, but did not take any reps.
  • Former Ohio State defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins, who announced his retirement from the NFL last week, was on the field with Ohio State’s defensive line coaches on Thursday observing practice as he explores a potential career in coaching.
  • Former Ohio State safety C.J. Barnett, who’s now the Buckeyes’ director of player development, was on the field repping as a scout-team receiver and defensive back during teach periods for the defense.
  • Scouts from at least eight NFL teams, including the Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis Colts, Washington Commanders, New York Giants, New York Jets, Green Bay Packers, New England Patriots and Las Vegas Raiders were in attendance.

Quarterback Julian Sayin loved the “chippiness” that came with the added physicality, while safety Jaylen McClain said the standard remains the same despite all the new faces on defense. Both players also praised wide reciever Devin McCuin and Jay Timmons, who have stood out through the first three practices.
  • On McCuin: “A really, really talented receiver. A lot of speed. Very smart player. Knows where he’s going, he’s in the right spot. And a guy who’s willing to block for us and go do the dirty work and make plays, so he’s done some good things.”
  • Sayin with more on McCuin: “He’s done some good things since he’s been here. He’s a hard worker. He’s somebody who a lot of players notice in the weight room. He’s a guy who gets after it and is about the team and team is first with him. He’s somebody we’re lucky to have on offense.”
  • Sayin said he weighs about 215 pounds now. He said Ohio State strength coach Mick Marotti pushed him hard this offseason. “I think the extra weight has helped me in throwing the ball and running the ball.”
  • When told that Marotti considers him the toughest player in the Woody, Sayin said, “It’s pretty cool to hear that. Jeremiah (Smith’s) a pretty tough guy, too. … It’s cool coming from Coach Mick. But that’s the culture we have here. It’s about fighting to be the best version of yourself and how tough you can be.”
  • On Jay Timmons: “I mean, a really talented player. Somebody who is anticipating instead of reacting. Kind of has a nose for the ball, and a really good player. He’s challenging to go against.”
  • Sayin said Ohio State’s practice was a lot of fun on Saturday. He said the team putting on pads for the first time brought out a competitive spirit in everyone. “Definitely encourages it. It brings out the best in both sides. You love the chippiness. You don’t obviously want to get excessive, get into fights or anything like that and waste time. But you love the chippiness because that’s what it’s gonna be like on Saturdays. And we’re making each other better.”
