2025 tOSU Offense Discussion

QB processing power determines the scope of play calling though.

Thats #1 through 99 for me. Everything else should be fine. Absurd talent and depth.
Same

So it is especially interesting to me that Day has said multiple times over the past year or so that Sayin has a “quick mind and a quick release”

I have to say and this will be unpopular… but I think JJ needs to be better than he was. Easy enough for a guy like me to say that I know. He’s still the best in college football but whatever it is about Texas.

It wasn’t the drops (those aren’t common) but to me his body language wasn’t great all game, was allowing himself to get pushed around more than you’d think, and there were a number of motion plays where after he motioned across he didn’t even turn upfield. Instead just sort of slowed into a jog facing the sidelines.

He acknowledged in the season his job this year might be decoy a lot of the time. I don’t think he handled that well on Saturday.

He’ll be fine obviously. He’s a young player still but I was kind of surprised to see him visibly irritated (not greatly but I could tell at least) this early in the year. He’s going to need to prepare himself because this is the blue print now.

He’ll rebound and he’ll be fine but for sure have noticed he can get himself off his game.

He came across as someone pushing to change the narrative that Texas can shut him down. After Sayin missed him getting single coverage his frustration showed and he kept looking upfield too quickly. They only threw the ball downfield a few plays and Texas was keying on screens to him.

Don’t think it’ll be an issue going forward. WRs get more frustrated because their ability to make big plays is mostly dependent on gameplan and situational awareness/ability of the QB. Getting a big win and trusting the process helps too.

The biggest worry coming out of a stupendous Week 1 victory for Ohio State football

The Ohio State football team did what was needed to win against Texas, but this is the biggest worry the team has coming out of that game.

The Ohio State football team must figure out a way to run the ball better

Ohio State wasn't able to figure out a way to run the ball at all in the opening game. Surprisingly, CJ Donaldson got the start in this game. He did score a touchdown, but ran it 19 times for only 67 yards. That's just 3.5 yards a carry, which is not good enough.

Donaldson was by far the better of the two backs that the Buckeyes trotted out. James Peoples was horrendous, putting up just 20 yards on 10 carries. He was constantly stuffed at the line and never came close to breaking out for a big run. His longest run was just six yards.

The offensive line has to bear some responsibility for that. They were fantastic in pass protection, but they simply couldn't move Texas off the line of scrimmage in the run game. Texas has a very solid defensive line, so the Longhorns certainly deserve some credit for that.

It seems like Ethan Oniwanwa is a total bust as a transfer portal player. He played 15 snaps at right guard and wasn't good in any of them. He was supposed to play left tackle, but it looks like he can't play any position up front. It's a horrendous development for someone who got paid a lot of NIL money.

It's highly unlikely that the running game remains this poor throughout the season. The Buckeyes will be able to figure it out and have this offense running like a well-oiled machine. Still, this is something to watch over the next few weeks.

IMO this is the worst the offense will look the whole season. Day and Hartline went out of their way not to put too much on Sayin in his first game and the training wheels will be off the next time we play a decent defense. I'd rather Sayin be talked about as efficient/did what he had to rather than off target/struggled like Arch. It would have been nice if the line had been able to gash the defense better, but good luck stopping the run, doubling Smith, and covering the rest of the receivers in a few weeks.

Very much agree. Once we went up 14-0 there was no reason to do anything remotely aggressive. I’m surprised we did that crossing route on 3rd down late in the 4th to be honest. The rushing attack should’ve looked better but that was a good defense and the first game. Not to mention you’d have to imagine their goal was to stop the run and force Sayin beat them. Then you add in that we weren’t going to put Sayin in that position? That’s how you get 200 yards of offense. The offense oddly still felt dangerous all game.

These next few weeks it’ll be nice if the rushing game in particular gets going.
