2025 tOSU Defense Discussion

The “couldn’t do shit” comment…

That’s ridiculous. You got 16 points. There were a ton of plays for Illinois too. Add in OSU being down some dudes and this isn’t anything to chest thump over. You caught us off guard and took all day to do anything with it and that includes a late touchdown that didn’t have the full starters in as well.

They were pressing late while our back ups were in too with their starters in the game as well. Thinking you were successful Bert is comical. Thanks for identifying were we can improve though!

Btw we didn’t have to be special because Illinois couldn’t stop giving us points. Sometimes you let your opponent self destruct and that’s what we did.

I cannot believe I am typing this but the only game left on the schedule that might press this defense is Indy. At least until the playoffs. And I guess technically Indy would be in the B10 Championship game so that is the playoffs in a manner.
Indy might find out that the Bucks Dline is not playing around. Right now I am trying to figure out who in college football can beat tOSU this season. Which honestly I had just assumed with a 1st year young QB that this team would be a year away from making another run at it. It is like Day has finally figured out how to make the sausage, cook it, and serve it.

Isn't this Defense pretty young? I feel like last years defense lost a ton of dudes to the draft. At least the 2 DE because I wanted the Lions to grab either one.

The TCUN team will be a problem for us. Anyone expecting anything different is going to be disappointed.

They’re content running the ball for 4 yards and by that time their QB should have a bit more experience. They have some nice pieces at WR and TE too. They won’t be as challenging as Indiana but right now TCUN has our number. They’ll do something this game that’ll surprise us whether it’s a half back pass or a package for a player we haven’t seen.

Something and it’ll be maddening,

All of us would be wise to stop looking past TCUN.

Also this defense is more veteran than you think. All starters in the front 7 are veteran and everyone besides McClain as well as Sanchez has experience in the backend too. We are going to be replacing a bunch of talent again next year.

If we’re nitpicking the D on a Monday

1) It starts with the base 4 DL not getting pressure. That said, it didn’t seem like they were asked to do anything exotic. That was as vanilla as it gets on the DL. I think someone said this in the game thread but it really felt like OSU could have dialed up the “sack the QB” play anytime it wanted, so not much concern here. This is a really strong unit and better when they free up lanes for blitzing LBs (or CBs).

2) Middle pass coverage. Washington had a couple of these and Illinois exploited it too between LBs and deep safeties. That’s tough for any D if a QB has time and can make those throws - I know a couple times the TV angle looked like guys were wide open, but then you see behind the QB and realize some of those are pretty tough windows. Altmeyer dropped some in and got his guys crunched. And if that wasn’t open, he was smart to dump it to his RB underneath. Tough spot for the LBs to cover both. Also…Beau Atkinson somehow ended up dropping into LB coverage on one play. Scrap that.

3) Devin Sanchez - let’s put this out there. Plain and simple the freshman got picked on and lost his individual battle making the whole D look “bad”. It happens, playing CB is tough. He’ll be fine.

Also, the tempo was a little concerning but a new test for this group.

Really starts with the DL and getting pressure (duh). I think if Matt P or Day felt more threatened things would have looked different. As it stands, they got a solid win vs. a good veteran QB without exhausting much effort or game film.
