2025 tOSU Defense Discussion

A lot of great points made. Even though it's just one game, it shows how to two DCs drastically use their talent. One has a system, and his players HAVE to fit in the system or they won't work and won't play, hence why it takes multiple years to see success. The other has a system that can altered to the strengths of the players that he has. Think about how CJ Hicks was wasted along with trying Sawyer in the "Jack". Seems like Patricia will utilize guys where they can fit, and not force square pegs into round holes. This will help immensely going forward

And to add, this is why it takes multiple years for Knowles' system to be fully implemented as opposed to Patricia. Who's system he was able to simplify and incorporate players how again, to their strengths and no have to change their play

I said this before the season and I think even after 1 game I’m ready to state it as fact. This is a better back 7 than we had last year.

I think Matthews is a big upgrade, IGB you can tell really worked on his technique, Downs is everywhere, McClain really played solid, and the two LBs are just a nightmare. The LBs have to be the best set of backers since when? I’d imagine Hawk/Carpenter?

Then the scheme is really interesting for the front four/pressure. Damn, you can really tell the high level football that Patricia has brought.

I’m so damn excited to see how this defense builds on each week. Also, that PSU matchup with Knowles is going to be fun.

I'm just joking, I will forever appreciate Knowles for helping to bring an NC to OSU. But I firmly stand behind the new DC

I think the best part of Patricia is seeing what he'll have cooked up every week. In CFB, most DCs are married to their scheme(for good reason), but in the NFL if you do that, you're cooked because offenses will figure you out so fast and easily. Patricia isn't being overly complicated in what he's asking of the defense, but is asking them to make looks and make slight changes to throw of an offense. It'll be interesting to see what he does to Washington and then a team like Illinois, as both are quite different offenses than Texas. The offense for Texas came down to a few plays that were honestly some amazing throws by Arch and catches by Livingstone and Endries. But you can't rely on highlight level throws and catches to have a competent offense.
It will then be interesting to see how Patricia alters the defense to stop run heavy teams like Ped St and scUM. 2 teams who want their OLs and RBs to set the tone, but the back 7 for OSU is some of the most physical and fast as we've seen in a while.

I'm concerned about how they covered wide out screens. Granted, Tejas wide receivers were top notch blockers, but hopefully MP is addressing this before the conference schedule.

There are definitely things to clean up. There were times Texas WRs were open and missed, a poor pursuit angle when spying on Arch, some other stuff. It'll be obvious on film review even if Arch didn't make the throws. I think the main takeaway everyone should have is that it's rare to see CFB teams disguising and executing at this level in general, and very rare to see it first game of the season.

Ryan Day Expects Rotation at Defensive Tackle As Confidence in Buckeyes' Depth Has Grown

157496_h.jpg

On Tuesday, Ryan Day spoke more confidently about Ohio State's defensive tackle situation than at any other point in the lead-up to the 2025 season.

The Buckeyes' DT depth has long been an emphasis for Day, a position group that got worked as hard as any other for the team during summer workouts. Kayden McDonald and Eddrick Houston have long been projected starters for Ohio State, but the biggest concern has been its depth pieces.

But Day expressed a newfound confidence heading into the Buckeyes' top-three showdown with No. 1 Texas, listing redshirt sophomore Will Smith Jr., redshirt senior Tywone Malone Jr. and freshman Jarquez Carter as defensive tackle options behind McDonald and Houston. He expects a rotation at the position.

"We're going to roll those guys pretty good," Day said. "I feel like we've developed some depth there. And I feel like we're going to feel good about putting different guys in the game. Between Eddrick and K-Mac and Will, Tywone Malone, even Jarquez, you're going to see guys kind of mix in and out of there."

The DT's scored pretty good Saturday:

Kayden McDonald, Will Smith Jr. and Jermaine Mathews Jr. Earn Highest Grades from Pro Football Focus for Ohio State’s Win Over Texas

The Top Three

1. DT Kayden McDonald (82.4)

Entering the season-opener against Texas, a concern many analysts had about Ohio State's defense was the interior defensive line. McDonald answered that question by racking up eight tackles against the Longhorns, earning the second-highest tackling grade (77.1) among all defensive tackles in the country. His tackle grade was the best among all DTs in the B1G and he also led the Buckeyes with a score of 82.2 in run defense.

2. DT Will Smith Jr. (80.7)

Living up to his namesake, the Dublin Coffman alum was the only other Ohio State player with an overall grade in the 80s against Texas. Ohio State’s backup nose tackle behind McDonald, Smith recorded two tackles in 16 snaps.

Defensive Tackles

Kayden McDonald: 82.4 (38 snaps)
Will Smith Jr.: 80.7 (16 snaps)
Tywone Malone: 69.7 (14 snaps)
Jarquez Carter: 67.0 (3 snaps)
Eddrick Houston: 57.2 (39 snaps)
