2025 tOSU Defense Discussion

DE - Kenyatta Jackson
NT - Kayden McDonald
DT - Eddrick Houston
Rush DE - Beau Atkinson
WLB - Sonny Styles
MLB - Arvell Reese
CB - Davison Igbinosun
SS - Jaylen McClain
FS - Caleb Downs
CB - Jermaine Matthews
NB - Lorenzo Styles Jr

2’s
DE - Caden Curry
NT - Will Smith Jr
DT - Tywone Malone
Rush DE - CJ Hicks
WLB - Riley Pettijohn
MLB - Peyton Pierce
CB - Devin Sanchez
SS - Malik Hartford
FS - Faheem Delane
CB - Aaron Scott
NB - Bryce West

Keep in mind it sounds like Patricia is playing with multiple formations in backend that utilize Caleb Downs versatility……it sounds like in specific situations, Downs will be moved to Nickel so he’s closer to LOS and Malik Hartford and Jaylen McClain would slide into safety positions.

I also think Caden Curry will be somewhat interchangeable as a starter….I think he will get starter level snaps. Logan George is another DE I expect gets tons of playing time even if he’s not listed on the 2 deep.

To add to your points, I can envision times where Downs plays NB, and pushes Hartford to the other S spot.

Ryan Day Expects Rotation at Defensive Tackle As Confidence in Buckeyes' Depth Has Grown

157496_h.jpg

On Tuesday, Ryan Day spoke more confidently about Ohio State's defensive tackle situation than at any other point in the lead-up to the 2025 season.

The Buckeyes' DT depth has long been an emphasis for Day, a position group that got worked as hard as any other for the team during summer workouts. Kayden McDonald and Eddrick Houston have long been projected starters for Ohio State, but the biggest concern has been its depth pieces.

But Day expressed a newfound confidence heading into the Buckeyes' top-three showdown with No. 1 Texas, listing redshirt sophomore Will Smith Jr., redshirt senior Tywone Malone Jr. and freshman Jarquez Carter as defensive tackle options behind McDonald and Houston. He expects a rotation at the position.

"We're going to roll those guys pretty good," Day said. "I feel like we've developed some depth there. And I feel like we're going to feel good about putting different guys in the game. Between Eddrick and K-Mac and Will, Tywone Malone, even Jarquez, you're going to see guys kind of mix in and out of there."

Statement made.

Ohio State welcomed No. 1 Texas into the Horseshoe on Saturday and made it five wins in as many games against top-10 teams dating back to last season's College Football Playoff national championship run. The Buckeyes shut out the Longhorns and preseason Heisman Trophy favorite quarterback Arch Manning for more than 55 minutes en route to a 14-7 victory.

All three levels of Ohio State's defense impressed as new defensive coordinator Matt Patricia put on a masterclass. Arvell Reese played to an All-American standard at linebacker and Sonny Styles had almost as much impact alongside him. Cornerback Jermaine Mathews Jr. intercepted one pass and broke up another, but safeties Jaylen McClain and Lorenzo Styles Jr. stepped up in big ways as they assume new starting roles. That's not to leave out a strong day from the defensive line, either.
