2025 tOSU Defense Discussion

knowles talked about this a lot to give the players time to learn his system.

i’m not sure if it finally worked because the players learned, or because he had a bunch of 2-3 years experience guys this year, or because day forced him to address the rift with johnson… or maybe all three things.

i’m interested to see what patricia can do right off the bat. that’s where i think knowles didn’t quite perform in his first year or two.

EDIT: @RugbyBuck said it… 3 years is a no go these days.
Burke said in his interview that they simplified the calls after Oregon 1 so it seems like it was still too complicated even with all that experience.

yes, i saw that. and the other thing that he said, which was interesting was when browning was asking him about opponents coming back late in games. burke is pretty transparent.

browning [21:33 mark]: the notre dame was another game, right, you guys were essentially killing them... great job, you know, staying with it, right, to keep playing. and obviously they got themselves a little bit closer in that situation. from your perspective, at any time, at any point, did the team feel a shift from that late pressure from notre dame, or was you guys just confident throughout that whole game that you guys pretty much had it and you just gotta make that last play that kinda put them away?

burke: i ain't gonna lie... there was moments. because some of the play calls that were being called on the defensive were pretty questionable. and we were just hoping that, like, our DC wasn't going to get himself in a bind and put us in a bad position. we were just trying to make sure that we all just stayed together and understand that we gotta finish this game out.

this makes it sound like knowles had a habit / tendency / reputation to get himself into these positions. so, it wasn't that the players weren't executing, but that the play calls were going over their heads. reminiscent of many-a-nailbiter over the last few years. and i guess that ryan day, after the oregon game, had had enough.

All of which raises the question, what exactly was Knowles trying to do? It doesn't make any sense to me.

Just rewatching the game, it looked like he either wanted a knockout punch or thought that Leonard couldn't make certain throws. Either way it was an average game by Knowles and a bad 2nd half. Should never have gotten that close.

he was confusing guys pushing them to do complicated stuff they weren’t comfortable doing… trying to make guys fit his schemes especially when things were getting tight. and the players would freeze up somehow.

Weren't they using more complicated coverage calls after Oregon and especially in the playoffs? Maybe not and it just seemed that way due to it being too complicated.

He's turning into the groundskeeper from King of the Hill.
when what we need is good ole carl spackler… i can picture patricia living in the toolshed behind the green, plotting gopher-gedden, while playing 18 holes on the stuff during the day and getting stoned out of the bejesus on it at night…

wait… umm… wrong thread. :wink2:

back to the topic. everyone move along.

Way-too-early 2025 Ohio State depth chart projection: Defense

Caleb Downs highlights the Buckeyes’ few returnees on defense in 2025.

While we still have a long ways to go before the first depth charts are put together, here is how we think the starting lineup will look on defense as we project ahead to Aug. 30.

LE: Caden Curry

DT1: Kayden McDonald

DT2: Eddrick Houston

RE: Kenyatta Jackson

Depth: CJ Hicks, Logan George, Tywone Malone, Jason Moore

MIKE LB: Arvell Reese

SAM LB: Sonny Styles

CB1: Jermaine Mathews Jr.
CB2: Davison Igbinosun OR Devin Sanchez
Nickel: Bryce West OR Aaron Scott OR Sanchez

FS: Caleb Downs

SS: Malik Hartford OR Jaylen McClain

Lorenzo Styles Jr should be on the list somewhere.
Insane amount of corner/nickel talent.

McClain is going to be special. I think he's our guy at SS. Another possibility could be Lorenzo Styles.

McClain seems to be the front runner and did look good when he was in there. Hartford could win the spot or rotate in though, he looked great his first year and mostly disappeared this season for whatever reason...big offseason for him.

Edit: I say "for whatever reason" but Downs was healthy all year, Ransom was mostly healthy, and Hancock was healthy in the slot. You're not going to play a ton in that scenario, but learning from those guys and getting some reps in the meantime will help them tremendously. The opportunity is there now for both McClain and Hartford to shine.
