2025 Spring Practices, Spring Game, and other Tidbits

Scrolled through three pages of comments, and pretty much spot on. Was wondering how come our RBs were having so much success, and felt that yeah, they're pretty good, the OL is ahead of the DL at this point, and finally, the DL lost a whole bunch of talent. Not entirely certain of the answer, but probably has elements of all three. DL probably seething, because no blitzes, stunts, twists, or otherwise 'getting after it'. As someone mentioned, pure vanilla. Most of us watching the QBs with rabid interest, because the season rests on their arms, feet, vision, patience etc. Saw nice elements from all three. Read somewhere that tOSU is going after Tennessee's Nico Ixxxx with $5mil NIL package? Sincerely hope not, but up to Day. If happens, betting at least two of QBs flee. Anyway, wasn't all that surprised to see Hartline up in the box, doing his OC dance, but in second half, also not surprised to see him at field level. Knew he couldn't keep away from the action. Part of his maturation as well, am guessing.

Wholeheartedly approve of the way everyone got into the action. Saw plenty of names not familiar with, and the 1's, 2's, and 3's all got some live action in. The two OL transfers appeared to hold up well, as many above noted not much of a DL push. Sorry not to hear CJ's name called more, but did like the side-to-side of the LBs. Final note, haven't heard any sort of commentary from the recruit attendees. Anyone seen that? Final Final note, loved those rings. Wife thought they were gaudy, but I thought they were beautiful. Hopefully Day will get enough to display 'em all on his desk when recruits come to his office (like Nick Satan did). Go Bucks! PSSS, am jealous of all you folk that got to sit in the Shoe. Thought it was warm weather (seeing the cheerleaders), but saw lots of jackets on the fans in the stands.

I Hope we don't have to go after Nico either, but that dude earned my respect in the playoffs. The boys beat the fuck out of him (after Ransom and Simon took his running back away) Kid kept getting up and battling. Maybe Day liked the toughness and sincerely does think that Sayin isn't tough enough. I don't think that, but the rumours for some reason keep saying that.

The offensive talent is overwhelming. The run game looks like it’s picking up where it left off.

Offense is going to be insanely difficult to contain. For whatever reason fully expect to only score 21 points against PSU

I didn’t see anything last year from Nico to think he could run our offense with only ~4 months from start to Texas. If he’d come here as a freshman, he would be far ahead by now.

Sayin can definitely run the offense. Just needs to minimize mistakes and continue to develop.

Where did you read that? All I've seen is internet morons speculating.

One thing I'm worried about is blocking. Underrated part of Trey's game. A big part of the bomb to Smith against ND was Trey sticking his face in there against the blitz and holding up. Peoples is on the small side.
It's more about being willing to stick your nose into the block than size.

And if you believe their heights and weights, Peoples is only 1 inch shorter an ~4 pounds lighter. It's not that big of a difference.

Ryan Day’s admission after Ohio State’s spring game could signal what is to come in the transfer portal window

img_1283.webp

Ohio State held their annual spring game on Saturday and Scarlet defeated Gray by a score of 50-31. Scarlet was the first-team offense, while the defense was Gray. In Brian Hartline’s first action as the play caller, the offense went with a heavy passing attack.

Ohio State was led by Julian Sayin on the day and he completed 16-of-26 passes. The Buckeyes scored on each of his first drives against the Gray defense.

Coming away from the game, one area of focus is going to be the defensive line. The interior of the offensive line looked good on Saturday and was able to get a good push against the Buckeyes.

"There was a lot of knockback,” Ryan Day said from the offensive line. When asked if the Buckeyes would look to make additions on the defensive line during the portal, Day had a simple answer.

"I think we've gotta take a hard look at it."

The Buckeyes did the majority of their transfer portal work in the winter by bringing in players like TE Max Clare, OT Ethan Onianwa, OT Phillip Daniels, along with George. Ohio State isn’t going to be nearly as active in the spring, but the defensive line may be an area they have to add to.

I typically do go but doing stuff like that isn't comfortable yet with the stupid shoulder that's still recovering, so that would have been at least 2 if not 3 or 4 more people there....

Breaking Down How Lincoln Kienholz, Julian Sayin and Tavien St. Clair Performed in Ohio State's 2025 Spring Game

155772_h.jpg

Ohio State fans got their first look at the Buckeyes' three scholarship quarterbacks – Lincoln Kienholz, Julian Sayin and Tavien St. Clair – in live action this year during Saturday afternoon's spring game.

Whether it was due to the fact that he's the most experienced quarterback on the roster or there was another reason, Kienholz got the start to begin the spring game. It came days after Ryan Day admitted that the soon-to-be junior quarterback and Sayin were "pretty much neck-and-neck" in the competition to be Ohio State's QB1 in 2025, a statement that seemed to be much more sincere than just coachspeak.

While going against basic coverages throughout the majority of the game, each of the three quarterbacks showed glimpses of good quarterback play, with Sayin showcasing that in the first half and Kienholz and St. Clair doing so in the second half, as the latter seemed to settle in and showed off his arm talent in the final two quarters of the game.

But the most important thing was that each of the three received plenty of reps, which is important for the development of that quarterback room as a whole.

"I think it's just a matter of playing the game. And that's why I think we've talked about this this spring," Day said about playing all three quarterbacks as much as OSU did in the spring game. "As the spring has gone on, I've just realized that at all positions, but most importantly at quarterback, we have to continue to play 11-on-11 football. And you can see the growth. You saw some growth even in the short amount of time that you guys were able to watch some of the practice this spring."

"We have the ability to watch them on a daily basis, see them grow. And I wish I could say we need to get better at 1, 2, and 3, but I know we just need to play football with these guys. We're young. We have a lot to work on. But I will say there was growth today."

Sayin, though, received more passing reps than the other two quarterbacks, a majority of which came in the first half. The three quarterbacks combined to complete 40-of-60 passes for 465 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions on Saturday.

“I wish I could say we need to get better at 1, 2, and 3, but I know we just need to play football with these guys. We're young. We have a lot to work on. But I will say there was growth today.”– Ryan Day on the quarterbacks’ performance in the spring game.

We charted each of the 60 passes thrown by Ohio State's quarterbacks in the spring game, with a disclaimer that spring game stats are unofficial and may vary from other outlets. (Note: Each passing chart is categorized by how many yards the quarterback threw the ball in the air past the line of scrimmage on each attempt and whether the ball reached its target inside or outside the hashes, though the stats listed include yards gained after the catch on each completion.)

QB Passing Stats from OSU's 2025 Spring Game
Quarterback Passing Stats
Lincoln kienholz 13/18, 164 yards, 2 TD
Julian sayin 16/25, 178 yards, 1 TD
Tavien St. Clair 11/18, 123 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT
