2024 tOSU Defense Discussion

Just caught myself thinking that I need to be thankful for Knowles and the rest of the staff on this side of the ball.

The discussions since Knowles got here has gotten progressively more favorable each season... and now we're to the point that they are executing on levels we've not seen for a good long time. Like as in Haf-days.

What a great hire, taking nothing away from the rest of his coaches... I'm sure they contribute significantly to their success. But to have them operating like they are takes one heck of a leader.
Ooops

Sadly looks like my suspicions were right. Defense is good but not "generational." Hard to know if it's any better than last year since this Oregon squad is the best offense they've faced since Georgia in 2022. Them not being able to get off the field on 3rd and 5+ has been fucking maddening all year.
Too me this is what a Knowles defense is. It’s the way it was when he was at the other OsU. It’s fine against leaser talent, but winning a championship with it without a world class offense to actually win the game is a pipe dream.

Really believed in the 2nd half we'd make adjustments and create some turnovers against a QB that threw 3 picks in 2 weeks. You have players like Styles and Downs so that you can disguise pressure but yet we continued to sit back in zone hoping the offense would save the day. Would have liked to seen more Caden Curry...JTT continues to over pursue and teams still attack him on those RPOs.

0 sacks, 0 picks, 0 fumbles. Woof.

This. Also, on the defensive side of the ball, it's completely unrealistic to have a scheme were every player needs to have world class skill, needs to be perfectly in position every single snap, needs to play perfectly every single game. You won't have that even with the 01 Ravens .

We had to play zone. Burke couldn’t cover anyone man to man. Burke was a huge issue last night and should have been pulled. Matthew’s has every right to be pissed. The tackling overall was poor once again. The DL is pretty non existent. JTT needs to have his snaps cut in half. Did Sawyer even get off the plane? Ty Hamilton was a non factor. They needed to have a LB blitz on every play. Only way any pressure could have been generated. Plus they weren’t really doing anything with the exception of making tackles 5-7 yards downfield instead of attacking the line of scrimmage. Overall, I don’t believe a single player on D had a champion performance. Failure all the way around.

They didn't need to play zone - but I also think the Burke issue goes hand in hand with not creating pressure. At the same time, we need to give kudos to Oregon's OL that has improved steadily all year, and their WRs that can make plays. Can't expect DBs to survive in coverage for 5 seconds when teams have big boy talent.

Never expected that a very good defense returning almost everyone and adding one of the best safeties in the country would not just struggle, but be a liability.

A defense full of seniors shouldnt be this inconsistent, easily manipulated, and struggle to tackle. No idea what the issue is. Are coaches on different pages and trying to teach conflicting technique? Do they need more physical practices to work on tackling?

I think an uncomfortable truth is that many of these guys just aren't as good as we thought they were. It's one thing to not have dominant players, it's another to not have guys who can win matchups against NFL talent. There are zero pass rushing specialists on this roster, and no great blitzers. That coupled with a regressing CB1 and its hard to belive OSU will be able to take on elite offenses at Texas and again with Oregon and not rely on the offense to win the game.

Surprising that this page didn't have 100+ additions. Yeah, the D got exposed. Yeah, has performed well against lesser lights, and truly thought that Iowa was a very good test, that the D passed with flying colors. Was very surprised that the 'push' wasn't better. Am still not convinced that Oregon's O line is as good as they played. Maybe tOSU's DL was ready to sell out against the run, so the DE's 'stayed home'? If, the D was in a 4-2-5, were we playing zone? Our DBs are (or thought they were), every big as talented as Oregon's WRs, didn't we cover man? How many completions did they have in the seam? Where were the deep cover backers on their fly patterns? Weren't the safeties playing close to backstop the runs? And even with that, their RB got over 100 yards... Did in fact watch the DL, and didn't see any double-teams (could have missed?), on JT or Jack, or did the WRs get open so fast not enough time? JT got one hit and that was it. Don't think I'd want to be a player for this week or next, nor a coordinator. We'll see how well the Buckeyes respond against Nebraska (still my trap game), and then against Penn St. We're certainly not out of it, but the uphill incline certainly got steeper...Go Bucks!

I am a simple moron, but I have a few more thoughts after getting pissed last night.

Oregon is one of a few teams that can go 3-4 wide with a great TE and RB and threaten you at all 3 levels of the passing game. This gave them better numbers in the box to run. Gabriel can be inconsistent, but was on and OSU couldn't get to him and he was rarely knocked off his spot.

Not sure if it was just a bad night, or if the DBs don't match up well with smaller fast WRs. The huge issue is that the LBs are a liability and the DL can neither win consistently enough in the run, nor collapse the pocket in the passing game. And they aren't particularly great at blitzing. It's a huge issue and they're going to be facing similar challenges from PSU, who will spread them out with multiple TEs and RBs instead, and IU.

To be fair, Oregon has one of the best OCs in college, and a great combination of talent and good depth at the skill positions. But so does Texas. And so will a few other offenses they'll have to play to win in the playoffs.
