2024 tOSU Defense Discussion

Saban calling your scheme "antiquated" is not great.

It's always been so frustrating to me how it seems so easy for the offense to get the matchup they want.
That was pretty rough to hear, but he's not wrong for that game. I don't want to go back and watch that game, but we look like a completely different defense from last year. Ironically the problem could be that we are doing the exact same things and offenses have figured out tendencies. Whatever the case is, it obviously has to be fixed or else Oregon won't be the only L on the record. Not trying to be pessimistic, just realistic.

When you watch the Tejas/Georgia game and see the disruption that their Dlines produce with 4 guys, it just makes you go hmmmmm. And no it’s not the talent.

To some degree it is. JT and Sawyer are good pass rushers, but neither have the twitch or bend to straight up dominate in 1 on 1 matchups unless the opponent is in a hole and they can sell out on getting up field. Against Marshall, JT was flying up field leaving the QB or RB with an easy 10+ yards. Sawyer's gotten closer, and hopefully he'll have some breakthrough games, but there has to be someone quicker they could use on 3rd downs.

Also, if they're going to use the rushman package they should switch it. JT and Jack on the inside, Curry and Jackson on the outside. Unless they want to start running stunts.

Both guys were highly recruited and had lots of major offers. Everyone was excited we landed them and @Thump would’ve given the bagmen post if we didn’t. People were pumped they were coming back. This is why I don’t really buy the talent argument.

I’m more concerned that this far in their careers it’s still hit or miss with both of them. Also concerned that we don’t do more of what you suggested in your second comment about mixing it up more. I don’t see the aggressive physical front 4 and LBs that one saw watching the Texas/UGA game.

It’s on the coaches to coach them up and put them in a position to succeed. Lots of $$$$ in that defensive coaching room.
