Oh, there's much more dirt than that.
Fielding Yost was like Wile E Coyote. He kept trying to sabotage Notre Dame and it just backfired every time and made them stronger.
After ND finally beat them in 1909, Yost scheduled a game against ND the next year and then canceled 24 hours before kickoff.
He publicly petitioned against Notre Dame being named national champions in 1909.
Notre Dame tried to join the Big Ten multiple times from the 1900s-1926 and Yost made sure it didn't happen. And Yost petitioned and threatened other Big Ten programs to not schedule Notre Dame. So instead they would go anywhere and play other large programs like Penn State, Army, USC, Texas etc. and gained a reputation that they would travel absolutely anywhere and play anyone.
In 1929 Yost successfully petititoned rule changes to neuter Rockne's Notre Dame Box offense to try to make it less effective (making it so players had to be set for at least 2 seconds before the snap). But the new rules just made it harder for the defense to know where the ball was going pre-snap. Notre Dame rode that offense to another national championship in 1930.
Keep in mind after reading all that: Notre Dame and Michigan didn't play each other from 1910-1942. And still the entire time Yost was fucking with them and trying to sabotage their program.
