2024 Ohio High School Playoffs

They declined because they didn't want to play Marion?
"Hey Coach, I hear we made the playoffs!" "Nah, I declined the invite. Come back next summer."

So there's 4 16-team brackets in Division 3, correct? Possible 6 games to win the state championships? Am I reading this correctly?
Yup a team would have to play 16 games to win a state championship/become a state runner-up.

It's (at least) 2 too many in my IMO.

I will venture Hoban wins D2 unless someone out there has a superb passing game
Walsh is not beating Hoban on a neutral field without Walsh's refs

FWIW Hoban's male enrollment is most likely the smallest of all D2s and actually avg for D3
They're D2 strictly because they won so many State Championships so they got bumped up
Amusing they just beat St Eds.. St Eds has more kids on their football rosters than Hoban has students (male and female)

Correct on all accounts

D7 is the smallest division an some of them have a hard time fielding a team some weeks...New Miami wasn't even awful this year, they went 4-6 so it's not like they were 1-9 going into the playoffs. They know the reality is they will get destroyed and, most importantly, potentially hurt in this game and they don't want to risk that for their kids. I think every coach wants Marion Local far away from D7 ASAP and there probably was a message hidden there in their thanks but no thanks responses.

And also correct - all divisions in Ohio, 1-7, are setup the same in that there are 4 regions with 16 teams making it 6 wins to title town.

Very close - Hoban is the 3rd smallest in D2 at 316 for males. Only SVSM (268) and Hamilton Badin (291) are lower. https://ohsaaweb.blob.core.windows.net/files/Sports/Football/2024/2024DivisionII.pdf

They're not D2 though just due to dominance...they have a 177 competitive balance addition but even with just a score of 77 they'd still be D2.

St. Ed's is having a very down year at 5-5....although, that's still light years ahead of what St. Ignatius had become after the retirement of Chuck Kyle. 1-9 is an utter disgrace....they are 4-18 since he retired.

I think South Range gets there, but Ironton has looked vulnerable. Whoever makes it out of the meat grinder that is R18 (https://joeeitel.com/hsfoot/rankings/2024/region-18) is going to have a shot, but I definitely agree anyone other than South Range winning would be a surprise.
I disagree that Ironton has looked vulnerable - their only loss is to a Canadian football academy, and Pikeville, KY was a close game, but nobody else was even close. I think SR brings home another title this year - and Canfield will keep avoiding playing them so they don't lose

So those teams season are over? How could you do that to your seniors? Who would say “nah I don’t want to play one last game”?

Correct - although the original #16 had injury issues and I don't think they had enough to compete. 17 and 18 straight out declined, but without knowing them enough I think there probably is a concern about health for most.

Playoffs kick off tonight folks, enjoy what looks like solid weather this weekend and next. Too many games to highlight these first couple of weeks but I'll definitely be keeping a close eye on Mentor vs. Ignatius to see if we get that 16 over 1 upset.

Wow… I’d imagine the kids were given a voice in this. To decline a final game is wild though and times have changed.

We were 2-8 my senior year and I’m sure the team would’ve wanted another game even if it meant a butt whooping.

As a player I wouldn’t care. I could get injured horsing around in gym class later that day anyways.

It’s a physical game. But I think most would attest to the finality of never playing again and how I’d imagine the vast majority would want 1 more game with their buddies
As a senior, I fully agree and that's why I posed the question from a coaches POV. As a student, ESPECIALLY a senior, I'd want 1 last time on the filed with my bros regardless of our record and how bad we'd get beat.
