Drop the automatic bids, keep the first round home games. Top eight ranked teams get in. I think one big problem this year was unbalanced conference schedules. Too many teams that didn’t play each other ending the year with only two losses.

I just love that right after the ACC championship game ended that ESPIN announcers were working hard to justify SMU getting in. The committee is a joke along with the ACC.

First thing you have to do is 4, 16 team FBS conferences that operate under the same rules. Two 8 team divisions. 9 conference games per year plus 3 non conference games. Conference championship game gives 4 playoff bids. The last 4 come from the rankings. First round games on campus last 4 Major Bowls. Fight it out. Done and fucking done.

The caveat is conferences could start relegation so if a perennial loser occurs you drop them for an up and comer from the lower league but that would be a bit more complicated.

I don't think you fix the problem with the 2nd sentence by using the process of the 3rd sentence. Rankings are too biased (i.e. SEC circle-jerk). At least auto-bids take subjectivity out of it.
