2024 College Football Playoffs Discussion (12 Team Format)

Go home for Christmas or stay at school for the playoff game.

That is no small decision for kids at Penn State. NO ONE lives near Happy Valley. It's a hike, hard to get to and buried in snow.
I'd guess Slapping Valley is a ghost town the week before Christmas. Students all head home to Pittsburgh or Philly. Faculty take Winter vacations. And it's a hell of a lot harder to come back for the game there than it is for some kid from Cleveland or Cincy to do the 2 hour drive up/down I71 to get to Columbus.

Nice! Cheap tickets. Now you have to pay $1800+ for a room and you have to go to Happy Valley in hillbilly Pennsylvania.

The lack of hotels and the roads going in to this place are what people just don't understand unless you've driven them.

This time of year in this kind of weather it's legitimately dangerous to drive up in those roads. So kids go home, faculty goes home and anyone who's going back for a game is driving for hours because it isn't close to shit, through some god awful mountain passes and two lane roads to get to a game and then have to drive back because there are about 100 hotel rooms in the area.

PLUS, it's fucking SMU and Penn State.

Put it all together, mix it around, bake for 30 minutes and viola....$40 premium seats.

i can attest to this having made a road trip there. middle of fucking nowhere

I'm astounded that a school with 45k students doesn't have ample hotel rooms in the area.
A quick look on Hotels.com confirmed it. Rooms are available, but you're paying $699/night, minimum two night stay.

To get to a more reasonable price of $149/night - you gotta go about 70 miles outside out town. And even then it's a Holiday Inn Express tier hotel. Not horrible, but that sucks to pack up and then have to drive an hour a 10 minutes just to get to the game.

It takes more than an hour and 10 to go 70 miles up there. Especially this time of year.

There is one major road. You, every truck driver who doesn't want to pay the tolls on the turnpike and the inbred locals doing 50 all share the same road and it can fog up, ice and snow all in the same hour.

The place is completely fucked up.
