2023 tOSU Special Teams

I'll check with you on what I am allowed to post and where next time?
It’s a message board. You’re allowed to repeatedly criticize the recruiting and the coaching.

And other folks are allowed to say they’re tired of hearing you say it over and over again.

I’m not taking sides, I’m just sayin’.

No problem for me.

I'm not of the opinion that people who post stuff I don't like/agree with should stop posting it.

Jermaine Matthews is a beast. Functional speed. It's one thing to be fast running down the field. It's another to be scary fast, but under control enough to get there first and make the tackle.
He is a beast and the superb special teams play will translate to playing time on defense (and already has). He shows that same speed and tenacity on defense. Going to be a really important piece of our defense in coming years.

I looked up how our return units perform against the other teams today b/c I was curious and bored. We are averaging 22.2 yards per kick return and an almost unbelievable 4 yards a punt return. Our kick coverage is averaging 16.1 yards a return and punt coverage is averaging 11.1 yards a return. Overall the coverage is better than I thought but it's probably not ideal to give up a first down + on average on punt coverage.

Looked at in the context of other FBS teams

84th in gross punt yardage per game (168.2)
123 in opponent gross punt yardage per game (241.5)

So if I am reading that right A) we suck at punting and defending the punt and B) we are losing 73+ yards per game to our opponents due to point A.

That's almost a hundred net yards that offense and defense have to make up for.

Wouldn't OSU presumably have a lot less punt yardage simply because they don't punt as frequently as their opponents? Gross punt yardage seems like a completely useless stat to me.

Yeah, I wasn't clear on it but the more I thought about it, gross minus gross should give a rough idea of net. No?

It sure as shit seems like we give up a lot of hidden yards there when you watch it live. I can't for the life of me figure out why a program with 4 and 5 star athletes waiting for their turn to play, can't find guys who can catch a punt and run like hell with it.
