2023 tOSU Special Teams

Punt return defense was 117 in the nation, and seems to be last in Big Ten.

Kick return defense seems much better as 37 in nation.

Fielding seems to be in top 25% for field goals made. I don’t see anything useful on punting stats, like percentage within 20 yard line.

Again, time to make James L a FT coach.

Mirco was 95th nationally in Net punt yardage, and like 63rd in punt average.

I've NEVER liked the rugby punting stuff as a full time thing....maybe as a changeup but it's the go-to here. If that takes a coaching change then yes, do it.

Another thing I want to see gone is the punt safe for anything beyond 4th and 2.

Special teams must be special. They weren't a factor. Given the athletes on the field, that has to change.

This man. It's truly maddening to not see anything special at ALL from the ST unit.

Fielding is fairly high in FG accuracy because he's 5/5 from 20-29 and 6/6 from 30-39. That's over 60% of all his attempts.

It gets dicey after that. 4/6 from 40-49 and 0/1 from 50+. Accurate, just not a big leg.

Seems like he has a big leg, I have seen him put enough on it to make from 55-58 yards. That 47 yarder against Minny was good from 10 more yards out. But when he gets to 50+ his accuracy goes awry. That's most college kickers really, but it does make you miss the Nugents of years past. But I do think if he works on that range he has the leg to get it there if accurate.

You can't trust a college kicker. Mike Nugent aside, I wouldn't trust any of them, ever. So when you have that the rest of you Special Teams better be special in a good way. In the immortal words of Marty Brennamen "how we lookin?"

"It happened again last Saturday at Michigan. Ohio State’s only penalty came on an illegal formation on a punt. Xavier Johnson cost OSU both time and yardage when he did not fair catch Michigan’s final kickoff. The Wolverines easily won the head-to-head comparison on both placekicking and punting."

Above from a Cleveland.com article.
