2023 Bowl Games Discussion

No, I'm thinking of a showboat return guy they had in the 60's after OJ, but before Charles. It was during a game with ND that he must have gained over 200 yards in kick off and punt returns. Actually caused me to root for the Irish for one game. Googled it: Anthoney Davis was a consensus All-American in 1974, and led the USC Trojans in rushing, scoring and kick return yardage for three consecutive seasons. He is especially remembered for scoring 11 touchdowns in three games against Notre Dame. In a 45–23 USC win on December 2, 1972, he scored six touchdowns which set a school single game record. Two of those scores came on kickoff returns. He returned the opening kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown after Notre Dame won the coin toss and chose to kick.

I remember the 1974 game between USC-ND. The Trojans outscored them 49-0 in the second half after trailing 24-6 at halftime.

And it was 24-0 until 10 seconds before halftime. They got a score there, and then Anthony Davis returned the second half kickoff 102 yards, and ND started puckering. One of favorite non-Buckeye games ever, because of the devastation of the Domers.

Their other wide receiver was T. J. Houshmandzadeh. Those three shredded ND's secondary.
The other thing I remember about that is that In & Out had just opened their first franchise in AZ, the at i-10 and Dysart for those familiar with the area. The next day my wife asked me to take her there for a burger and when we got there a bus load of Beaver fans had just pulled into the lot, it took an hour to get our burgers (those were good burgers Walter!). I was kind of baffled as to why someone would take a bus from Oregon to Arizona for a football game instead of flying.
