They did mention during the game that CJ and the line were having communication issues due to the wind. Sometimes you just need to get up and run the play that was called. Even going under center on a day like yesterday. Boy some tempo would have been nice as well.

Well I didn't think of that tbh, I've never heard of wind so strong the players can't hear each other at the line. It obviously affected the ball in the air and there's no denying that though. But yeah, call the play that was called and adjust.

One thing that is baffling to me, is we should at least be able to muscle yardage in bad weather situations, yet, apparently our running game is so predictable that any defense can just shut it down.

I don't understand the lack of run game at all.

I was an apologist for a while, when I thought maybe they were just throwing film out there, however, the fundamentals have to be there regardless.

Something seems
fundamentally off. Like other's, I am not a coach, but knowing we have a talent gap on the other teams played, some of this has to be coaching.

Who is OSU's run game coordinator?

Tony Alford has the title of ‘run game coordinator’ as of January, 2022.

The run game coordinator can only do so much. Day calls the plays, and I’m sure he goes over them with Wilson. But the predictable run plays fall on the shoulders of our HC. Times like this, are when I miss Urbans spread run game, though at times it was frustrating watching him run JT over and over. But the lack of QB run threat in this offense holds it back in one instance. And in the other,if they concede that they don’t want Stroud running, then new run schemes need to be drawn up. Urban showed that when you spread a defense out wide, it can open up inside run game. Why aren’t there more counters, etc. Why aren’t we using the pass more to set up the run, if we’ve now stated that we’re a pass first team? That type of team can win, but you have to have successful runs when it’s time to run. And you HAVE to convert on short yardage 3rd and 4th downs! I’m in no way a coach, but it feels like if I know where the ball is going, then there are problems(and they started to happen towards the end of Urbans tenure).

I wasn't too excited about yesterday's game, besides the outcome. The one thing I thought about CJ's running was whether the coaches were hoping to hold that off until later in the season. He can definitely run and it seems like a nice wrinkle for a certain final game of the regular season.
At the very least they should be showing it to give other teams something to prepare for. In a big game, that is not something you just get up and throw in.

It can open things up if they actually choose to do it every so often.

This x1000.

We could literally run JT on QB power and get six yards every time because the box was typically light. The reason was we always had 3 WRs and we'd motion the tight end in. Shoot sometimes we'd do that from an empty set with no RB in the backfield.

IMO we are trying to be Wisconsin when we run the ball and Ohio State throwing the ball. Problem with that is when we go to our heavy looks or under center teams are just all over it.

Running from our throwing formations would really help open up all of our plays. I think we did that at the end of NW with better success.

We can either run into a light box or a heavy one depending on our personnel and for the life of me I don't understand why we are chosing to go heavy.

Oh he definitely cannot run the ball! He looks like a pocket passer trying to find yards(he’s arguably the least athletic QB we’ve had since Haskins, and I’d say Haskins looked far more comfortable moving the pocket than Stroud). Stroud has been a statue the last 2yrs, and his running is ugly, like he’s going in slow motion, and not in a good way(like TP who’s strides made him look slow as he flew by defenders). I was hoping that he could show a little more athleticism, and attempt to get yards with his feet eventually. The defense is daring him to. I’d like to see his game evolve more into an Aaron Rodger’s style, gets yards when needed with his legs, but always keeps the defense honest with his arm. And that dual threat opens up the run game.

.
I think Day tends to get in his own head and second guess himself. It’s like he’s trying too much to outsmart the defense, and in the end he becomes predictable.
Imo, this offense should resemble some some of the Chip Kelly Oregon offenses. They were pass heavy, no huddle spread teams but also had massive success running the ball. Kelly was able to churn out LaGarrete Blount, Lamichael James and Kenjon Barner in a row, and all had great success running in the pass happy Oregon offense

The irony is not lost here. Some would argue “being Oregon on offense” is the opposite of what we need in the run game. We do have Chip Kelly’s QB coach and offensive line coach…

Idk why they would argue that, as Kelly had multiple RBs who ran VERY well in his system, and I named 3 just from Oregon. He also had Zach Charbonnet recently at UCLA. And in the NFL he had RB success with Lesean MCcoy in Philly and Carlos Hyde in San Fran

I'm not sure it matters what scheme you use or how many guys there are in the box when your guards both end up 2-3 yards in the backfield.

Even on Miyan's first touchdown run, Donovan Jackson ended a yard and a half in the backfield. Matt Jones at least moved his guy sideways.

I know Matt Jones has a foot thing he's been dealing with, but you just can't be consistently successful running the ball with your guards getting their butts kicked.

A wheel route would be nice to see.
We should be using Tre like ttun uses Edwards. There's no reason that Tre can't be used in the throwing game.

We just aren't consistent when we want to run or pass. We run from obvious running sets and when we want to throw we throw from spread. Again, it's ok to just stay in spread and then run the ball. At least this way we are more difficult to defend (less predictable).

I thinks it's very frustrating adding multiple heavy personnel to run the ball. That just invites the defense to do the same.

What I thought was cool to see was Scott was brought in to play the slot WR and was used to block late. That helped a lot and paid off big late.

Well that's the disadvantage of going east/west when someone's attacking you north/south. Oh well though we'll continue to run it.
