the last couple games it seems that day and wilson are just toying with teams. seeing how far a pure vanilla offense gets, minimizing the number of looks and packages are getting put out there.

It's possible. Since the bye was in the middle of the season, they might've spent it analyzing the first half, and deciding on what they'll keep.

Since they had 2 tough defenses in a row, they went back to basics to get through them, and will now spend the next 3 games tinkering and working on what they want to be heading into the game.

i would have thought that they'd throw more wrinkles at the tougher defenses. this is what's a bit puzzling for me. if they were trying to keep it basic i would've thought they'd do that before the bye week given the strength of those opponents' defenses.

seems backwards, to me.

Agree. That's the main thing that makes me pause and wonder if something else is going on.

Klatt is 100% spot on about the OSU offensive line being a very real concern down the line.

We can say Henderson dances too much, or CJ needs to run a little, but it's noticeable that the Oline just isn't getting the push they need to win on a elite level.

I am not sure it can be fixed this season either.

I love Day, but like the D, he let the issues fester on too long. Such is the case with allowing Stud to neglect the Oline for a couple seasons.

I am not sure Frye is the answer in the long run, but I hope he can figure out a way to bondo up the Oline in the meantime. I am skeptical it can be done.

I don't know about all of that, at least with the pass blocking. Seems like we are solid there absent a couple missed assignments. The run blocking has definitely not overall shown up be elite and I do worry when we play a UGA or Bama, whatever, we get one dimensional and then the pass rush kills us bc we get in obvious passing situations.

But I'll say that the OL is plenty talented and deep to be elite, and they've been close in many respects. Problem is I don't know for sure until the end of November. I wouldn't be throwing up distress signals though, I think they've mostly played well but show some signs of weakness. Hell, even in the run game when we won the title with Zeke and a dominant OL, the OL wasn't dominant until the 2nd half typically and really only became elite towards the end of the year. Point is, we have time :)

I don't think any of it is unfixable this year, but they're also running out of time to fix it. This is a correctable mistake:

The play calling is also doing them no favors at this point. If they're in pistol they're almost certainly running zone to the boundary. Maybe they'll break that tendency against TTUN, but it's predictable and Iowa and Penn State were determined not to let the run game beat them and ate it up.

There's nothing wrong with leaning into your strengths. You hit 3 scoring drives with Marv and Emeka getting 20 yards/catch and the defense will back off, then you can start pounding.

i will add that Henderson doesnt do the best job of running through arm tackles currently

He does not, and I don't know how well he's seeing cutback lanes right now either. I think right now he'd be better served running to a gap than the zone schemes they like.

the difference in the running game when miyan is in vs. when trey is in has been very noticeable to me all season. he just seems more decisive from the handoff

Or just stop trying to act like you are going to tough manball it into submission when the other team has superior numbers.

By my count there are 6 people at the line and 10 within 3 yards of the line of scrimmage. Can you get a yard against that? Yes. But a lot of things need to go right. Instead Stover comes off the line instead of widening it continue up the seem and go over the top. Then do it every time they do something like that until you start seeing reasonable numbers in the box.

Re: Oline push.

When we run our vertical/inside zone game, I have noticed a lack of, I guess I'll say "nasty". And, yes, a couple missed assignments here or there as well.

It's interesting watching when we run away from Dawand's side. Because that's where his size tends to work against him, where Ideally you'd love a RT who climbs to the 2nd level looking for work.

There are certain downs and distances, like above, where you're going to get unfavorable box numbers period.
