2022 Rose Bowl, tOSU vs Utah, Jan 1st @ 5pm EST, ESPN

Denzel Ward opted out of the Cotton a couple years back so it’s not too much of a shocker to me. Heck probably the only reason the entire team played in 2018 is because it was Urban’s last game. Don’t blame the players one single bit though. We all like to talk up the non-CFP bowls but they’ve been meaningless for years now.

I kinda don’t even blame the CFP though. Even when the Buckeyes didn’t go to the BCS Championship I was still equally hyped when they went to a great bowl against a big time opponent. I remember the buildup for the 2005 Fiesta, 2008 Fiesta, 2009 Rose, and 2010 Sugar Bowls being palpable. Logically adding two extra teams shouldn’t really diminish the importance of these bowls to this extent. ESPN both existing as a propaganda network for the SEC and being solely in charge of the CFP has basically rendered bowls even more meaningless than they already are. Like who gives a fuck if the SEC goes 0-9 in bowls this year and they’re all blowouts? ESPN is still going to be pushing the “Two SEC teams in the playoff” narrative before a single game kicks off because of financial reasons. It feels so obviously slanted and borderline “WWE” at times I occasionally wonder why I even bother. I’ve felt this way for awhile but I think 2019 is what finally broke me so to speak. This year is probably the least time I’ve ever spent watching college football. I’d used to spend all day glued to the big screen. This year though I’d catch the Buckeyes, maybe a couple of other interesting games, and that’s pretty much it. And this was supposedly the most exciting year since 2007.

But whatever. As for thoughts on this game, I kinda don’t have a strong feeling one way or another for this game. Nowhere near the oscillation between terror and calmness I felt the week leading up to the SCUM. That had bad vibes all around it as soon as the MSU beat down ended. Weirdly I’m feeling more confident even with the opt outs? The “Buckeyes have no motivation” narrative is so strong and obvious that you almost expect the opposite to happen.

The last paragraph is all I can think of to get my hopes up, the team gets pissed with the narrative and reverses. Also, now I'm probably going to the game lol. I knew this would happen.

Can't watch that 09 USC game, I get violently pissed off. There was absolutely no way in Hell the Bucks should have lost that game other than being too conservative. Not going for the 4th and 1 inside the five early in the game, then coming up empty was just infuriating.

USC’s first TD on 4th and goal wasn't a TD. Stafon Johnson’s left leg was down before the ball crossed and they didn’t look at it. My memory is fuzzy on if there was actually any replay that game because I know early on, when two teams from different conferences played there wasn’t always replay. Other than that, it was a fantastic game. Defense was elite until the final drive lol.

Replay existed, but that was the relatively early days when it was newer and the refs didn't use it as a security blanket like they often do now. Back then there was a real hesitancy to use replay at times, and certainly that game is one example.

A total of 63 scholarship players were spotted by Eleven Warriors during the portion of practice that was open to the media. Not including players who have entered the transfer portal since the end of the regular season, that meant that 18 scholarship players were not seen at practice.

The list of absences from practices included several notable defenders. Defensive tackle Antwuan Jackson, linebacker Cody Simon, cornerback Sevyn Banks and safety Marcus Williamson – all of whom started games during the regular season – were not present on Tuesday afternoon, leaving their availability uncertain for Saturday’s game. Simon battled a shoulder injury for most of the regular season, while Banks missed the final two games of the regular season with an undisclosed injury.

Other players who were not seen at practices included three of the four Buckeyes who have opted out of the Rose Bowl – wide receiver Garrett Wilson, offensive tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere and defensive tackle Haskell Garrett – as well as running back Marcus Crowley, wide receiver Kamryn Babb, offensive linemen Harry Miller and Josh Fryar, defensive end Tyler Friday, defensive tackles Jaden McKenzie and Noah Potter, linebacker Mitchell Melton and safeties Josh Proctor, Jantzen Dunn and Jaylen Johnson.

Crowley, Babb, Miller, Friday, Melton, Proctor, Dunn and Johnson are all out for the season due to injuries.

OTHER OBSERVATIONS
  • With Wilson opting out, Smith-Njigba was Ohio State’s first-team punt returner while Martinez was fielding punts with the second unit.
  • After missing four of the final six games of the regular season, including Ohio State’s most recent game against Michigan, Master Teague appeared healthy at practice for the Buckeyes. Teague was third in the running back line in multiple drills Tuesday, behind TreVeyon Henderson and Miyan Williams, with Evan Pryor occupying the fourth spot.
  • Freshman wide receiver Emeka Egbuka, who missed the final two games of the regular season, appeared healthy and active at practice for the Buckeyes on Tuesday. Day said Monday he expected to have the five-star recruit available for Saturday’s game.
  • There were several notable jersey number switches on the practice field Tuesday, with Stover switching from No. 8 to No. 5 – the number normally worn by Williamson on defense – and Jeremy Ruckert and Gee Scott Jr. swapping jerseys during the session. Ruckert wore No. 13, and Scott wore No. 88.
  • Freshman cornerback Denzel Burke, who wore a bulky shoulder brace against Michigan after suffering an injury against Michigan State, was not wearing the brace on practice Tuesday.
  • With Simon absent from practice, Tommy Eichenberg appeared to be the first-string middle linebacker next to Steele Chambers, while Teradja Mitchell and Palaie Gaoteote comprised the second unit in a couple drills. Mitchell, who did not play at all against Michigan and only played on special teams against Michigan State, was wearing a brace on his right knee.

@BB73 and I were sitting (errr... standing) in the closed end, which is the end where Ohio State would start its final drive. I think it was second down, it may have been first or third, but I think it was second... Taylor Mayes is showing blitz off the right edge, there is no one lined up against Duron Carter. Pryor doesn't look that way. Mayes comes on the blitz leaving Carter absolutely uncovered running a go up the right sideline. Pryor never looks at him and launches a prayer to Posey (who he'd been locked on to) who was well covered, the throw is out of bounds up the left sideline.

Why the Buckeyes didn't try to sneak on that drive that stalled at the 1 I'll never know. A 6'5" QB should have easily been able to reach across the goal line.

I remember that play vividly. I hit the person next to me in the head when I threw my hands up wondering why Pryor didn’t throw it to Duron.

Taylor Mays & Major Wright are two guys that excelled in the secondary back then that would never ever be allowed to suit up today.

I can still hear the collision between Boom and Mays.

When that happened so early in the game ( Buck's 1st series?) I had a gut feeling that the Bucks were gonna lose that one. I think it it showed that "TresselBall" wasn't going to cut it anymore.
Any other time, holding USC to 18 points should have been an automatic win.

Just excited to see more young guys get a big game experience. It sucks to be missing some great players, but IMO, this is a great opportunity for the team, win or lose. I also think fans are going overboard with 'OSU sucks, program is soft, Day is John Cooper + Larry Coker' after the TTUN game. It'll be tough, but I think it'll be closer to the PSU game than TTUN.

In the middle of a hyperbolic article about how OSU is ruining the rose bowl (by opting out), a very real truth was typed out:

This game would (allegedly) be the mountain top for Utah in term of big wins. Regardless it's right up there. So much is riding on this.

If OSU wins, I think it's pretty fair to say that this can't crack the top 50 (if not a lot broader) for OSU in terms of wins. It's 16th or 17th out of 20 in terms of bowl/cfp games since 2002, depending on what you do with Arkansas. And given the program trajectory and the SEC hype, I'd argue that was a lot bigger, even if Utah is a better team and this outcome is likely to remain in the record books.

It's not a commentary on Utah at all. If an oddsmaker had them favored, I'd raise an eyebrow and then shrug. They deserve a lot of respect. That has no relevance to how big this game is for OSU.

If you ranked Michigan games, there are dozens that outrank this, if not every one of them.
There are dozens of clashes against next tier B1G foes.
There are plenty of huge OOC games.

But toss those aside, and just look at the last 10 postseason "bowls." UW @ Rose is 10th, and this is probably 9th.
Extend that to 20 games, and UF in Gator and OkSU in Alamo slide in at the end of the 20, with these two recent Rose bowls checking in at 17/18. Arkansas/KSU are probably 15/16 (I could go either way in ordering them).

That reality has nothing to do with Utah. They are stout, vastly underrated, hungry, and will give OSU everything they want. I would absolutely not bet any dollar against them in the Rose. You can have the proper amount of woe, preparation and respect for the serious challenge Utah will present, meet those challenges at every turn, defeat them, and after doing so, this becomes an afterthought that happens to take place in a great venue.

This game is about momentum into next season and little more. That's a very challenging way to enter a game when the other side is vastly underrated nationally and incredibly hungry.

Where the hell is all the Rose Bowl memorabilia?? They went all out for other teams and we get to pick from the stuff left in the dumpster behind the stadium?

Where are the Rose jerseys of old? I don’t need another Zeke jersey. C’mon, fools! Release that authentic 2022 Diamond Evil Empire jersey so I can commemorate the death blow being delivered to the PAC 12 after crawling out of Satan’s innards.
