2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar

Just imagine if the best American athletes grew up playing soccer like almost every other country in the world. I think the women's team is a good example of that since soccer is much higher on the list of women's sports than it is for men. I didn't even know Wales was a real country.

Basically Wales is only a real country for FIFA (i.e. soccer) purposes.......

Is Wales an Independent Country or Part of the UK?

Who Recognises Wales as a Country?

There are different opinions around the world as to whether Wales should be recognised independently of the UK or not. Usually, political organisations will recognise the UK whereas many sporting organizations recognise each constituent country of the UK independently.

Below is a list of different organisations and whether they recognise Wales as a country or not:
  • The Commonwealth Games recognise Wales as a country
  • The United Nations does not recognise Wales as a country as they only accept sovereign states
  • FIFA recognises Wales as a country
  • The Olympics does not recognise Wales as a country
  • The World Health Organization does not recognise Wales as a country
  • The EU does not recognise Wales as a country

Yep, driving into Wales from England is just like driving from one state to another. There was just a sign at the border.

I use to think about that too; however, it all comes down to current US (athlete) role models and the fact that the NBA, NFL, and MLB pays a lot more than MLS:
