2022-2023 Ohio State Men's Basketball

I watched the stream. Chaminade didn't put up much resistance, and I was surprised to see Sensabaugh struggle as much as he did. I would say my expectations for him and Thornton are maybe a notch or two down, and Gayle and Holden a notch or two up. Okpara looked extremely raw offensively. The beginning was rough - looked like no one was a go-to guy offensively, then Holden took over and the team coasted vs poor defense the rest of the way.

Is Holden as much Jalen Brunson as I remember in my few times watching the Horizon League? Not the quickest mover but gets to his spots and hits midrange.

HOLDEN RED HOT OFF THE BENCH

STILL WITHOUT SUEING

DISAPPOINTING REBOUNDING EFFORT

STARTING FRESHMEN STRUGGLE ON OFFENSE

LIKEKELE, MCNEIL GLUE THINGS TOGETHER

Ohio State’s preseason tuneup against a Division II opponent went about as smoothly as Chris Holtmann and company could’ve hoped.

Chaminade’s 8-for-38 start from the field, including 4-for-21 from 3-point range in the first half, doomed the Silverswords as Ohio State finished the opening period on a 19-2 run that gave it a 23-point advantage at intermission. By game’s end, the Buckeyes extended that lead for a 101-57 exhibition win as the new-look Ohio State roster proved it could get the job done even without Justice Sueing (ankle) and Eugene Brown (concussion protocol).

Wright State transfer Tanner Holden came off the bench to lead the way with 25 points for Ohio State, and Zed Key poured in 15 of his own in just 16 minutes before all was said and done. The Buckeyes demonstrated a clear edge in the paint, played a far more efficient game and received major contributions from their bench in the blowout victory over an outmatched out-of-conference foe.

The Buckeyes shot nearly 30% better from the field than the Silverswords, and finished the game having converted well over half of their 3-point attempts.

The defense should be better

Ohio State needs to be more aggressive on the glass

Holden might be your drought-snapper

Sean McNeil is not the next Justin Ahrens...… Bowen Hardman is

Key added 15 points and five rebounds in 16 minutes. He was 7 of 9 from the floor.

Gayle hit on 6 of 7 shots from the floor on his way to 14 points.

Freshman Bowen Hardman, planning to redshirt this year, came in late and hit four threes to finish with 12 points.

Likekele finished with 10 points, four rebounds and four assists. McNeil was 3 of 5 on threes and had nine points. Sensabaugh had 8 points.

Thornton struggled with his shooting, finishing with two points on 1-of-7 shooting. But he led the way with 11 assists.

Isaac Amaral-Artharee and Braden Olsen each had 12 points to lead Chaminade.

Not sure we can afford to redshirt Hardman. If we dont have other shooters to go to this season he might have to play in spots. With his shooting ability he can change momentum but he needs weight to play on the defensive end. He is eerily similar to Ahrens' freshman season.

I think McNeil can be that guy

Seems like a lot of overreactions to a preseason game versus a D2 team, but is Monday's game on TV anywhere? BTN looks to be showing shit I don't care about.

"I think they're really excited. They've been waiting for this moment." Holtmann said. "... I think there were definitely some nerves the other night, which is a good thing. There'll be nerves on Monday night for this group. More so probably than we've ever had, just because of so many new guys."

Chris Holtmann: We want to schedule tougher nonconference games at Value City Arena

The 2022-23 Ohio State men’s basketball nonconference matchups, while formidable, don’t bring a lot of buzz to Value City Arena.

The Buckeyes will face preseason top-20 teams Duke, North Carolina and San Diego State as well as two other high-major programs as their appearance in the Maui Invitational unfolds, but all five of those games will be played outside of Ohio State’s home arena. With a 20-game Big Ten slate also on the schedule, the Buckeyes filled out their six non-conference games with opponents all ranked sub-300 nationally according to KenPom.com: Robert Morris, Charleston Southern, Eastern Illinois, St. Francis (Pa.), Maine and Alabama A&M.

That’s not historically how coach Chris Holtmann has scheduled his non-conference games, and in an appearance on The Gene Smith Podcast, Holtmann said the coming years will see at least one more recognizable name on Ohio State’s home court.
