When I get ready for bed, I set out some clothes to get up early and go for a run. That run is hours away from me.....so my brain is all about it. Then the alarm hits and it's 6am and I'm in my comfy bed. All of a sudden I'm not so all in anymore. It's easy to "want it" when "it" is so far away you can't see "it".
Yep. We will see how "all in" they are mid season after their third loss. Since at least 1950, those assholes are undefeated against us in the month of July.

The college football landscape is changing by the minute. Expansion is on the horizon and the playoffs have the potential to expand as well.
With all of this ridiculously consequential news for a sport we all love, I figured it was time to check out MGoBlog to read their take on expansion.

Their only article: Is Michigan football splitting carries too much?

Oh my god. They honestly believe that. There was a run that Weber made where he went OOB and on his way back to the field, the ref slapped his ass. Refs do this in literally every sport. This is proof positive to them that the 2016 game was fixed. Ignore the fact that, if you were going to fix that game...it would be Michigan being the benefactor based on the Harbaugh resurgence story line. One ref/player interaction that is routine is their proof that they got screwed.

You are asking an awful lot of a fan base that, five years later, still hasn’t grasped the fact that when possession starts at the 25, you don’t need a chain to measure if the nose of the ball reached the 15 for a first down.

It’s fun highlighting the DFBIA greatest hits, but the doses of reality in this thread are also pretty good reading.

Does anyone feel like this season's gonna be different?

I will root, I will go to a couple games, but I’m a realist. We were 2-4 and would have been 2-6 if we played our last 2 games. We’re installing a new defensive system that we scarcely have the right personnel for. We lost our best LB, our best DE, our best DT, our best OL, and a few other contributors.

So there’s nothing wrong with optimism, but there is little in reality that says we’ll be better than last season other than people thinking we have to get better. It’s the least talent we’ve had since year 1 of Rich Rod.

I feeling hopefully confident that we will be better than 7and 5 that they are predicting.

I think it’s going to be worse than the usual 8-4 / 9-3 so yeah, I think it’s going to be different.

Based on what? We literally have no information. And the team last year was horrible and quit.

Not this season, no.

QB could be top-2 or top-3 in the league, but I have seen what happens to Harbaugh QBs the longer they stay in the system. The RB room is crazy good, but we have OL questions -- coach and center. Receivers -- will we use them? Will the scheme be modernized? And defense will be a work in progress this season. As I have said all along, we're looking at somewhere between 5-7 and 7-5 in 2021.

Now, next season? Hell yes, I have optimism that we will at least get to 9-3. Recruiting should improve further, the defense should be humming, QB and RB should be strengths (especially if JJ is starting), and OL might be figured out by then. So yeah, I will be pretty positive for 2022 -- at least positive enough to believe 9-3 is achievable.
Optimism is now 9-3. And recruiting should improve further? They must have missed their current four-year recruiting slide.

The talent just isn't there, IMO. Who on offense is the OP talking about? We have a weak armed three star Qb, a bunch of unproven WRs and interior linemen. And worst of all, the playcalling is still Gattis and Harbaugh who have been awful.

The DL is still weak on the interior, still have no CBs...

No. I don’t. Michigan has been all hype and no results, all sizzle and no steak for two decades.

I think they could beat Washington, but I expect Wisconsin to run this defense over with some other RB they’ve just plugged in who will run for at least 1200 yards this year. I expect to lose at Penn State in a game that Michigan has chances to win but they won’t capitalize on their opportunities. I expect MSU to be a toss-up where MSU comes in fearing absolutely nothing about Michigan and expecting to win. I expect Schiano has circled this game in red ink for the last year and will have Rutgers ready to play and expecting to win.

I expect OSU to approach Michigan playing like a national title is on the line, like they do every year, and will beat Michigan like an unwanted stepchild.

Neg away if you want, but for those of you who do, I challenge you to show me something tangible and on the field that explains why I should believe otherwise.

This team has talent, but the results on the field suggest maybe they’ll be 7-5. 6-6 is a very real possibility. OSU is a guaranteed loss. It’s very possible that Wisconsin, Washington, Penn State, MSU, IU, Rutgers, and shit even Nebraska are losses. Scott Frost will be fighting for his job, and that game is in Lincoln and will likely be a night game.
Even a mostly grounded take still has the “this team has talent” disclaimer… at some point maybe they’ll realize outside of a few positions, their subpar recruiting and even worse development has led to a team that doesn’t have superior talent against half the teams they play anymore.

"An offense loaded with talent"? That could have been said about many recent years, but saying it about this year stretches the bounds of optimism to delusion. Osu is loaded with offensive talent. UM is loaded with hope. Not sure how many great college offenses are built on 2 or 3 returning starters. Also, I don't think it's an ideal situation to have your head coach working under an incentive laden contract after 6 years. That smacks more of desperation than optimism. That being said, I've never understood the point of being a sports fan without eternal optimism. The tide eventually has to turn the other way. Why not this year?

I think you answered your own question.

OP, I admire your enthusiasm but also feel sorry for you. Miracles can happen, sure. But there's virtually no chance this team wins more than 8 games. They will for sure lose to OSU and Wisky. They will likely lose to PSU and Washington. Sure, M could steal one of those games (although it hasn't stolen a game in years). And there are 2-3 other lesser teams could easily steal one from Michigan. Aside from 2-3 players, the defense has mediocre talent. And we don't have a surefire QB or a reliable offensive game-plan.

Vegas has Michigan at 7.5 wins. Sounds about right. But if we come out with losses against the 2 UWs, the Harbaugh deathwatch will begin and end swiftly. Sorry.

Love how so many people here just assume Michigan will beat Washington, which will come in as favorites. How many times in recent years has Michigan beaten a Pac 12 team? Reminds me of all the times everyone thought we'd roll over Utah.

Also what is all this "new energy" you cite? There's been literally no meaningful news or information about the team in months. It's a black hole. So the energy you're feeling is 100 percent in your own mind.

Not so much. 9-3 is the absolute ceiling, with 7-5 the likely outcome. I’d be shocked if we make it to the second half of OSU game within 21 points of the lead.

It’s bittersweet for me as I feel it’s time to move on from Harbaugh but yet I’d love to see a good season.

Now back to your regularly scheduled DFBIA.

I agree whole heartedly with the OP. Our expectations have been driven so far into the dirt that we almost can't help outperform them. Have a funny feeling our D won't be nearly as turrible as feared, hearing all the positive rumblings about Macdonald that we all are. And I suspect our QB is indeed a generational talent.
I considered not including this one because it has to be a troll, right?

I think the 2017 class was weirdly cursed. I don't know why. But I think moving past that class is going to be significant. We've made necessary coaching changes, and I think we are going to start playing like the top 15 class we've been recruiting like.
Our best class under Harbaugh didn’t do shit, but I’m feeling really confident that the classes that continue to get worse and worse every year are really going to start paying dividends.

If Michigan can get past Washington and Wisconsin, the team will have so much momentum and will start getting into the playoff talks.

I like how they are so conditioned to bullshit hype that some have made it their goal for the season before being exposed as utter frauds.

Are they still talking about Milton? Or are they referring to the transfer they brought in to start ahead of McCarthy?
