I don't know if "lucky" is the right word. It's absolutely true you don't see many major CFB programs dipping below D1 for a coach and having success. I can't even really think of any others that even did it outside of ND/Gerry Faust and that was an utter disaster. Jim Tressel was the right guy at the right time. tOSU's football culture had been decaying for some time. Hell, most would say (and be right) that John Cooper never "got it." Fortunately for Coop, he could recruit his ass off, but when the chips were down, more times than not, he came up short. By the end, he had lost all control of the program. Tressel, on the other hand, did "get it" and he built a powerhouse program by selling OHIO STATE to kids and getting them to play their asses of for it.The Bucks got lucky with Tressel. I'm sure there are folks here who know more about that 2000 hiring process than I do. But DII championships don't translate into National championship runs readily.
Ohio State had the same benefits that Michigan now offers: history, big ass stadium, strong alumni support, money. Despite those benefits, Tressel - who was not the first name on their shopping list - was the best they could do. Cooper and Bruce had winning records - Bruce was even one-up on the wolverines -and yet both were fired. Ohio State was seen as "mission impossible just as Michigan may seem to us now. Tressel proved the Ohio State job was not impossible. The Michigan job isn't impossible either, but John Cooper left Tressel the core of an NC team and Tressel and Finkel left Urban enough to attract Alabama-level recruiting classes. Nothing near that is going to be waiting for the coach who replaces Hairball, but history, alums, a big ass stadium, and money will eventually yield results.

“When you look at them from outside, you see a successful program pretty much everywhere but on the field against their true peers,” another coach said. “That’s really what it boils down to. They don’t need a complete change, but they have to identify what separates their offensive scheme and their development from the programs they expect to beat. This is a good program. But they’re Michigan, so you can’t be unremarkable.”
You’re not overly impressed with the Yale Bowl? They’ve been remarkably over hyped for 70 years of mediocrity, I’ll give them that.
No program in history has gotten more mileage out of their fucking stadium and shit that happened over 100 years ago.
Jury is out. Has Appy State ever won a game there? You’re not overly impressed with the Yale Bowl?
The answer is in the video...
I know exactly what you're talking about, and I have never heard anyone ever mention the rope climbing induced tummy tingles. Of course, they don't do that anymore in gym, im sure.Every time I see it, my tummy tingles like it did climbing the rope in gym class.
It always makes me have flashbacks to a Hanson brother getting a set of keys in the face and going into the crowd.these dick lickers jingle keys, for fucks sake.
It's hilarious, bc with Tressel we had moved to the point where we needed to alter the defense to handle quicker offenses, and Wisconsin just ran over us. So we also just accepted losses at the hands of better teams in hopes of saving face against the Wisconsin's of the world.Their fetish right now is not getting as ran over by Wisconsin as the past few years (they seem to concede that Ohio State is likely to score at will on them regardless). Big Slow Unagile LBers are surely the cure for that, yes?
Sounds like my Johnson. They’ve been remarkably over hyped for 70 years of mediocrity, I’ll give them that.
