Even with the injuries I thought Maryland would stress the defense a lot more than they did. I was nervous Rakim Jarret would be doing what did towards the end all game.
I wasn't though based off of our performances vs Akron and Rutgers. I know what everyone is thinking... "dude it's Akron and Rutgers"... me personally looking at the structure those two games it was sound.

Going down memory road here... and you'll have to draw from memory or look up the clips.

In 2019, I knew during that FAU opener we were different on defense. I remember the play... the FAU offense ran left and Browning wrecked the play which we'd never seen from him. Well I saw that very play from Mitchell 2 weeks in a row. Not to be outdone, in that same FAU game anyone remember that 3rd down swing pass that Okudah peeled back and blew up in the 1st Quarter? The same play occurred in the Maryland game where Hickman blew it up. The defense playing a ton more zone is the reason. Eyes in the backfield and players waiting otherwise.

I don't see this defense slowing down and that's crazy because I don't think the offense slows down either.

Yes that's literally it. Stop their running back #1 and cover Nailer. If either one has killer game thats on us. Force someone else to beat us.

Did you miss my point or did you think I missed yours?

I agree.

Cover Nailer
Keep Walker from running

Yes, that’s all

“Oh is that all?” is a common idiom used to convey that, “Yes, that’s all, but it’s a tall order”

I will believe the Buckeyes slow Walker down when I see it.

They’re moving in the right direction

It’s still a possibility

I will be skeptical until Chambers makes Walker wish he was the one who switched to linebacker

I just imagine our front 7 being able to handle any run game with how we are playing. Just not sure any team with 1 decent WR is going to test us enough to force us out of the box.

Letterman Row made a good point today... With JJP, Harrison, Smith and Banks not having the years they maybe would want it's possible most of them return next year. If so that'd make us crazy Veteran next year and that's not even including getting Proctor back who may have a tough time getting the job back from Ransom.

Sorry to talk about next year in the defense thread now... I guess I never thought about why we are the youngest team in the FBS.

Nailer is not their best WR, Reed is. They have the best trio of skill position players in the conference outside of OSU by far.
Smh I can't believe they lucked into Walker. Dude is fast...

That said their WRs are not top end good like Dotson, the IU kid or even Demus/Jarrett but they seem like nice players.

I have faith in our 3 corners to stop them but I'm concerned about Walker. Has legit speed.

Walker is a diamond in the rough, they really did luck up and get him from Wake Forest of all places. But I just can't envision Payton Thorne beating us, if we force them to throw the ball. MSU is a very nice story after how bad they were last season, but they're best win is a suspect Nebraska team. They haven't played a team with the talent of OSU. And our defense is only getting better. I see a much more stout defense by the time MSU comes around. Not saying we will completely shut them down, but I think if Stroud can get them up early, and make them one dimensional, then that works in OSU's favor

Agreed on all this, but I also see us continuing to improve significantly in the games leading up to Sparty provided we get past PSU in a couple weeks. If that happens, we could put the hammer down. But I'm glad for the conference's sake that Sparty is playing better this year.

It feels good to be confident in the defense again. Pretty crazy stuff that we went from being a strict cover 1 or 3 team to having all sorts of options.

It's great to truly believe that the defense will be fundamentally sound, will at a minimum make teams earn everything they get and at a maximum has the ability to take over.
