2021 Spring Practices, Game, and Tidbits

A handful of media members were permitted to watch a few minutes of Friday’s Ohio State football practice, giving outsiders their first glimpse at the three quarterbacks who are competing to replace Justin Fields.

Not much throwing was seen, as redshirt freshmen CJ Stroud and Jack Miller repped in order, then were followed by true freshman Kyle McCord. Simple seam routes or skinny posts were the order of the day, at least early on. Later in practice after the media was ushered out, head coach Ryan Day had the team scrimmage for about 50 plays.

No judgments can be made on the quarterbacks in the 20 or so minutes the media watched them. And no judgments have been made from the coaches and players who have seen every single snap. Other than the talent is definitely there.

“Really across the board, these coaches are recruiting their ass off, man,” said senior safety Marcus Williamson when asked to assess the quarterbacks. “And so you look over there and the way these quarterbacks sling the ball, just seeing their improvement day to day is really exciting. I can’t give any specifics, but I’ve been really impressed with the growth of these young guys, especially with them not having any game experience. And just taking that step every day, just every day working to get better. What’s today, April 1st? We kick off in September, so just taking that step, it’s been great to see. So I’m excited for those guys to see what they do.”

The department anticipates approximately 4,500 tickets, at $5 per ticket, will be available to the general public.

Noon kick on Big Ten Network

The spring game will be televised live on the Big Ten Network. It will also be carried on the statewide Ohio State Sports Radio Network and flagship WBNS 97.1 FM The Fan with Paul Keels, Jim Lachey and Matt Andrews on the call.

The Band and Spirit Squad, Too

Ohio State will use this spring game as a test run opportunity for the 2021 fall season in terms of safety policies and procedures. The band and the spirit squad – Brutus Buckeye, the cheerleaders and dance team – will all be in attendance and performing.

PRESSER BULLETS: HASKELL GARRETT, ZACH HARRISON, LARRY JOHNSON AND OTHER OHIO STATE DEFENSIVE LINEMEN DISCUSS SPRING CAMP

LARRY JOHNSON
  • On Vincent's health putting him in a position to break out: "That's the difference. He wasn't healthy last year. He couldn't play." ... "He's what we thought he would be when we brought him in and recruited him."
  • Johnson says the high-level defensive line recruits in Ohio get to be around him and the Ohio State program, which helps them get used to the expectations once they arrive. "Jack (Sawyer) doesn't have to learn the technique. He has to refine it."
  • On Smith's pass rushing: "He's doing a great job rushing the quarterback." He doesn't want to panic at all just because he only had one sack last season.
  • Johnson says Tommy Togiai was so powerful inside that nobody could move him. He says Jackson is quicker player, which is what he adds.
  • What he wants in a nose tackle: "That guy's got to be a powerful guy. He's got to be smart." ... "We want to knock the line back."
  • On Jack Sawyer: "It's still early. I certainly like where he's at right now." ... "The thing I like about Jack is he's a fierce competitor." ... "He's going to be a special player down the road." Johnson says they'll find a role for him this fall, and he mentions he's never been afraid to play freshmen if they deserve it.
  • Johnson says Vincent didn't sit around and pout about his injury, which is why the coaches think he's in line for "great things" from him in the fall.
Just sayin': The entire DL weighs in too.
