2021 Spring Practices, Game, and Tidbits

See link (above) for the complete YouTube video of the press conference.

A bullet-point rundown of what Day said:
  • On Jack Sawyer: "Good to see him get out here moving around. It's so early on, our guys haven't even put pads on. ... So far, so good." He says the entire group of early enrollees have impressed the coaches so far.
  • He says the Buckeyes' first padded practice will be on Wednesday.
  • Day and the coaches focus on effort level, how well players are taking care of themselves and the ability to make corrections on the field early in spring camp. "If you're making the same mistake twice, then something's not right."
  • Ohio State doesn't plan to let the let the quarterbacks get hit in the spring: "There's too much to risk there."
  • Sevyn Banks and Cameron Brown will again primarily play outside cornerback. Also at the position: "It's a big spring for Lejond Cavazos and Ryan Watts." He mentions Denzel Burke will be in the mix at outside cornerback too. He made a play on Day 1 of practice that flashed. Cameron Martinez will be moving around and could be looked at as an outside corner, too. "The depth will kind of be built up as we head toward the season."
  • Day: "It feels like things are somewhat getting back to normal." He said the Buckeyes practiced outside today. On the lack of practices over the past year: "It set us back some as a program."
  • On whether the Bullet still exists: "It's still there. Really what it is is it's a hybrid." He says the linebackers were a strength of the defense last season which is why it wasn't used much in 2020.
  • If he and the staff look at how other national powers are recruiting: "We're always looking at that stuff, and I know (Mark Pantoni's) always keeping an eye on who guys get." He says it's less about the guys Ohio State doesn't get and more about making sure the guys Ohio State gets fit with this team.
  • On Thayer Munford staying at Ohio State: "He's a mature young man who understands the value of an education and what that means for the rest of his life and a life after football." He notes Munford's leadership has "stepped up" over the past few months. "I think he likes that role. I think he appreciates the guys who have come before and he wants to uphold that standard."
  • About Demario McCall: "I thought Demario's attitude and work ethic has been really, really good this offseason. Off the charts."
  • He says the guys at linebacker haven't really moved positions at all. Mentions Craig Young has worked a bit at safety (the Bullet).
  • Day says finding the mix of nickel/strong safety is really important. "I don't think we have our answer yet."
  • He confirms Steele Chambers will play running back this spring. There was some speculation he might move to linebacker.
  • On running back: "Master (Teague) is the incumbent. He certainly has earned that right to be the incumbent." He says the other running backs are hungry for playing time.
  • On the offensive line: "The idea is to find our best five offensive linemen. That's it."
  • He says Harry Miller will likely be a non-contact participant for the duration of spring camp.
  • If any of the quarterbacks have flashed early in spring: "Nothing early. We've been rolling them, so the reps have pretty much been split up equally. Some good things, some other snaps that have been just OK." He says there have been "good things from all three of them." ... "Certainly have not been disappointed by any of them."

“I think anticipating what’s going on on defense as opposed to reacting is the key to quarterback play,” Day said. “Those are the things we’re going to be looking for. It’s not going to happen in one day. But as long as we see a gradual movement toward those things, that’ll be a sign that things are going well.”

Not to beat a dead horse from last year, but it’s interesting Day makes this comment, when we literally gave away what we were doing on defense the entire year. He alluded to having “answers to the test” in same interview about QBs understanding what they’re looking at.

It’d be nice if our defense did not give opposing offenses “answers to the test” pre-snap. Really hoping to see some major adjustments in terms of disguising what we’re in, and mixing in a lot more zone to keep QBs and OC’s a little more honest.

While Ohio State has not yet determined its attendance policies for the remainder of the year, the state of Ohio is currently allowing 30 percent capacity at outdoor sporting events and 25 percent capacity at indoor events.

Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith previously said in February that Ohio State would not sell tickets for the spring football game, which is set to be played on April 17, but that Ohio State would look to distribute tickets to essential workers who have been on the frontlines during the COVID-19 pandemic – along with family members and guests of Ohio State players and coaches, who have already been able to attend on-campus sporting events – if it was able to host fans.

“If we’re allowed to have fans, we will not have a ticketed event. It will not be one where we’ll charge,” Smith said then. “My hope is that we’ll have an opportunity to develop a strategy to recognize our front line people; our nurses, our doctors, our custodians, our bus drivers and all those people who have made so many sacrifices for us for a long time now. That would be my hope, is that we could come up with a strategy to recognize them and invite them to the spring game and of course, obviously the parents of our student-athletes.”

A certain Buckeyes website was busy yesterday telling their readers how Jordan Hancock was tearing up spring practices.

AL WASHINGTON
  • "The best thing we have is competition." He says you can see the growth every day, and the goal is to be better in every way by the end of spring camp.
  • He doesn't remember being in a similar situation of losing four starters.
  • He says Tommy Eicheberg wasn't a blue-chip guy out of high school, so he has always had an attitude. "That's what's going to make him an elite player." Washington wants Eichenberg to become a leader, making himself seen, heard and felt by his teammates. Also expected him to turn into a better technician. "He's hyper-competitive."
  • On the Tennessee job talks becoming public: "I was extremely disappointed and frustrated. That was a private situation that was made public. That was very discouraging. First time in that situation. That was obviously something that irritated me."
  • Washington has stolen a Mike Tomlin phrase a few times to discuss the linebacker play at Ohio State: "The standard is the standard."
  • He says being at Ohio State puts him in a position to actualize his goals of becoming a defensive coordinator and head coach at some point in his career. But he's young... "Timing is important."
  • On staying at Ohio State: "I just felt for me personally, it was the best decision for me to be where I'm at."
  • Washington says he doesn't have a depth chart right now.
  • On the Sam linebacker spot: "Whatever skillset that guy has, you play to it. That's kind of one that you can mold around the player."
  • He says Gant not participating in the spring isn't in "the good category." ... "But there's still ways to get better."
  • Washington calls Cody Simon and Mitchell Melton "young studs." He says they were impacted by the now-gone seniors. "They just need reps. They need those repetitions. They need to be coached. They need to be evaluated. They need to be pushed."

I raised my hand (virtually) to ask about Craig Young but alas, there were WAY too many hands up and his answers were so long winded. It was great though, you can tell the guy just oozes with passion for the game and developing this group of guys

I would've liked a question about him as well. IMO, the LBs have the most talent/depth in the defense. We have up to 6 guys that could start and be successful.
