Time to start up that running tally again, LJB. I’ll set the over/under on transfers at 13.5
Here's the list from last season, ending in March before the start of Spring Football (which never really happened anyway, but that's another story....):

March update of the rats leaving the sinking ship....

_1. TE Mustapha Muhammad (transfer) (10/14/2019)
_2. DB J'Marick Woods (transfer) (10/21/2019) (Duke)
_3. LB Josh Uche (early entry) (12/04/2019) (NFL)
_4. LB Jordan Anthony (transfer) (12/04/2019)
_5. WR Tarik Black (transfer) (12/13/2019) (Texas)
_6. OL Stephen Spanellis (transfer) (01/02/2020) (Vanderbilt)
_7. OL Cesar Ruiz (early entry) (01/03/2020) (NFL)
_8. Coach Chris Partridge (quit) (01/03/2020) (Ole Miss)
_9. WR Donovan Peoples-Jones (early entry) (01/04/2020) (NFL)
10. DB Jaylen Kelly-Powell (transfer) (01/09/2020) (Akron)
11. RB Tru Wilson (transfer) (01/09/2020) (Northern Colorado)
12. DL Michael Dwumfour (transfer) (01/14/2020) (Rutgers)
13. Coach Anthony Campanile (quit) (01/16/2020) (NFL)
14. LB Devin Gil (transfer) (03/10/2020) (South Florida)

That's nine transfers (if you count the two midseason transfers) and three early entries, plus the loss of two of the best recruiters on their staff.

scUM has already had seven players leave the program this season (four transfers, three opt outs) prior to Zach Carpenter entering the transfer portal:

_1. DE Aaron Lewis (transfer) (07/20/2020) (Rutgers)
_2. CB Ambry Thomas (opt out) (08/20/2020)
_3. WR Nico Collins (opt out) (09/16/2020)
_4. QB Dylan McCaffrey (opt out) (09/16/2020)
_5. WR Kyle McNamara (transfer) (09/21/2020) (Western Kentucky)
_6. LB Osman Savage (transfer) (10/01/2020)
_7. LB Charles Thomas (transfer) (10/21/2020)
_8. OL Zach Carpenter (transfer) (12/10/2020)

Note: Lewis, McNamara, and Savage were part of scUM's recruiting class of 2020; these guys barely set foot on campus before leaving.

Note: Dylan McCaffrey has opted out for the 2020 season; he is expected to transfer but has not formally entered the transfer portal.

If we're going to count the two transfers that have already happened, plus the three in the portal, plus McCaffrey, then we might get close to that 13.5 number.

EDIT: During the 2019 & 2020 seasons, scUM has lost a total of 17 players to transfers and opt outs. By comparison, Ohio State has lost just four players during the same period, all transfers: Isaiah Pryor (Notre Dame); Brendon White (Rutgers); Alex Williams (Vanderbilt); and Jaelen Gill (Boston College). None of Ohio State's transfers occurred after the start of the 2020 season in August.

A lot of consternation over on _goboard that WR Giles Jackson has apparently been retweeting a bunch of transfer portal tweets. Is he any good? I can't recall him from the few games I watched.
He scored the first touchdown in The Game in 2019 on a 22-yard run, giving scUM a 6-0 lead, and scUM fans hopes for a gigantic upset. We remember how that turned out....

Most transfers are kids who are (1) buried on the depth chart, or (2) grad students who for whatever reason want to finish their careers in a new environment. It's really rare for a young starter to transfer. Unless there are some personal/family issues with Carpenter and he wants to be closer to home, this transfer is a really bad look, and bad omen, for scUM.

I get the temptation from the Football side. The screw job in 16 in The Game, the unbalanced scheduling, the lack of holding calls in Michigan's favor, changing the rules for OSU all the time. And CBS just lost the SEC so they could be looking for a replacement and Michigan football would be good.

But as has been pointed out, it is more than just football. Any other sport is fine, and it isn't just athletics, the academic side of the Big Ten is a very big deal. In short, No.

I’d be okay with leaving the NCAA all together for football. Find 10 or so other high academic schools (high endowment) who would be able to directly benefit from paying players a salary openly. (Stanford, USC, Texas, ND, Northwestern, Duke...)

When all the 5-stars start coming to your new league, and all players the NFL chooses to draft are coming from your new league, you are the new D1. NCAA will try to welcome everyone back for $$$, changing the rules about paying players, and you’ve had a few years head-start on other programs for recruiting in a free-market.

Right, we're the black sheep. Definitely not Rutgers, Maryland, and Nebraska.

Who are scUM fans?
