Suspect accused of football game threat enters guilty plea
July 1, 2020
A man who used Facebook to threaten a shooting at Ohio State University and vowed to hurt players on the football team and then-head coach Urban Meyer pleaded guilty Wednesday, authorities said.

An indictment unsealed late last year in federal court in Columbus accused Daniel Rippy of making the “electronic communication” threat from California during the game between Ohio State and the University of Michigan in 2018. The game was played in Columbus that year, and Ohio State won 62-39.

Rippy threatened a shooting at the school, saying in a Facebook message to the university, “I’m seriously going to hurt the students and all of the players from the football team,” according to a statement of facts filed Wednesday with the plea agreement.

In separate messages, Rippy also threatened “to injure or kill specific players, their family members and the head coach,” the document said.

Rippy previously entered a not guilty plea before Judge Algenon Marbley, who ordered him to remain in detention.

“Graphic threats of violence against anyone, but especially threats during high-profile events, are taken seriously and will be prosecuted,” said David DeVillers, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio.

Rippy faces five years in prison and a $250,000 fine at sentencing, which has not been scheduled.

Rippy “understands and accepts” the terms of the plea agreement, his federal public defender, Soumyajit Dutta, said in a signed statement as part of Wednesday’s plea agreement.

Rippy was arrested Dec. 28 in Livermore, California, released on bond, but then failed to report to the court’s Pretrial Services division as required. Rippy also didn’t report to a halfway house as required, court documents said.

He was rearrested in January and ordered sent to Ohio.

Man arrested for OSU football threat receives sentencing date

Almost two years since a California man was charged with threatening to "seriously" harm the Ohio State football team near the end of the 2018 season, bringing about federal charges in Ohio late last year, he has since gotten his sentencing date. Daniel Lee Rippy — who was arrested Dec. 28, 2019, in Livermore, California, on suspicion of being a fugitive from justice — is accused of using electronic communication to threaten a shooting against the university and its football players Nov. 24, 2018, during Ohio State's 62-39 win over Michigan.

According to a report Friday by the Associated Press, Rippy's sentencing date in federal court before Judge Algenon Marbley is set for Oct. 27. Rippy's sentence could be a maximum of five years in prison, three years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine.

Rippy, who initially maintained his innocence Feb. 14 and was subsequently ordered by Marbley to remain in detention, entered a guilty plea July 1. He "understands and accepts" the plea agreement's terms, federal public defender Soumyajit Dutta said July 1 in a signed statement.

Bill "Bank" Greene on Michigan's 2020 team. Some surprising comments from Greene, a noted anti-homer....

Discusses (1) Harbaugh entering the last year of his contract (expires at end on 2021 season) with no extension on the table, how it's a bad sign for program stability and negatively impacts recruiting; (2) Nico Collins and Ambry Thomas opting out even though they are not NFL ready; (3) Osman Savage and Aaron Lewis (both 2020 signees) transferring before the start of the 2020 season; and (4) presumptive starting QB Dylan McCaffrey transferring days after he and his family held rallies to save the 2020 Big Ten season (hints that the Michigan staff lied to him about being the starting QB, then gave the job to Joe Milton).

Predicts that Michigan will go 4-4 or 5-3 this season, with Ohio State thrashing them again: "There's nobody in America right now that thinks Michigan is on a par with Ohio State ... I see no chance they're going to beat Ohio State this year ... barring some miracle."

As for Michigan's future: "Definitely not a program that's getting better ... the needle is pointing down. [Michigan has been] getting murdered [in The Game] ... complete no-shows, non-competes."

Doing a little research and I see where Manuel has said he hopes Harbaugh retires at Michigan.

However, the reporter left off the end of the quote, which would read "this year."

Was not aware Harbaugh's contract had not been extended. I would like to think that hurts recruiting.

But the increased likelihood that he might leave probably helps them.
They're probably waiting for him to go 4-2, after an almost-not-blowout at State Penn (bad calls and missed calls and non calls from the Pennsyltucky officiating crew notwithstanding) before they put an extension on the table.

3-3 seems more likely to me, and 2-4 is on the table.

I think they lose two of Minnesota, Indiana, Wisconsin. They might lose all three.

It's hard to compete for the top New England prep school talent like that. BC, UConn and the Ivy schools will use that like a hammer.

Look, I've said it before. Coach Harbaugh is a once-in-a-century coach. A Michigan Man through and through. He deserves another 10-year contract, even a lifetime contract, so that he is evaluated with his own players and given the time to get things right. That said, if he is not renewed next year or bolts for a great MAC or high school coaching opportunity, the heads of TSUN fans will explode.:sob::no::paranoid::panic::shifty::mad2::grr::pissed3:

Ya' just hate to see it. :pimp:
