It's a defense mechanism. Ohio State and _ichigan are, and always will be football schools. If you poll the fan base of either school, "would you rather have a successful football or basketball program", I guarantee it would come out heavily in favor of football. Just because your football program is a massive underachiever and causes you nothing but pain and sorrow, you don't just get to say you're a basketball school because that program is better at the moment. DFBIA gonna DFBIA.
Oh, I agree 100%

I just like pointing out that they're not really all that good at basketball either.

Oh for sure. Nobody should let them get away with saying they're a basketball school simply because the NCAA tournament gifted them the easiest road to anybody not from North Carolina. And they still blew it.

They can be a softball school, if they want. I won't fight them on that.

I’d like to add to this conversation that the arrogant douchebaggery which cripples them in football is still there in basketball, it just isn’t as detrimental due to the nature of the sport.

I say this especially in light of people like Jake Long opining that the football team should be more like the basketball team culturally (or something).

Also included, and totally on brand, he points out that Juwan landed a couple of blue chip recruits despite the cheating cess pool that is CBB recruiting. Because, you know, everyone else in CBB is cheating, too...except _ichigan. It's unthinkable that the school that fostered the biggest scandal in CBB history, with one of the players from that era installed as their head coach would ever stoop to that level.

We can't win at football because bagmen
We're a basketball school
Coach Fab 5

If this were a movie with a robot villain, just explaining Michigan Fan to it would be enough of a paradox to make it explode.

What is the criteria for being a "basketball school?" I ask because they haven't won in basketball in over 30 years either. True they made the national finals 4 times since then, 1992, 1992, 2013 and 2018 - losing each time... but.. they have 2 regular season B1G championships since 1987 (2012 Tied with MSU and OSU, and 2014 - Ohio State, by the way, has 7 in that same time.) to go along with 3 B1G tournament championships (one of which, 1998, has been vacated.,.. you know.. for having had a "Bagman" involved with Tractor Traylor). I mean.. hell, Ohio State is clearly a "football school" right? OSU has 5 tournament championships (1 vacated - 2002) in that same time, though none since 2013.

it seems to me their definition is simply:

"We kinda suck at football and it's time we just accept that."

Do any other "basketball schools" pay their football coach $8mm/year?

WTH people?! They are neither a football or basketball school. I recall that they have become a baseball schoo...oops! Looks like they fucked that up too. Hate to see it.

I heard that as sarcasm but maybe that was just me.

"When I first went to Ohio State back in the spring time for practice, [Coach Mattison] was the first guy I talked to because I knew him right off the bat," Latham told Trieu last weekend. "He was telling me how different Ohio State's program was and how their facilities, practices, culture, all that was a lot better at Ohio State than Michigan. He was really telling me at their school, it's a business and they ran it strict to a T. He was telling me, 'if you're here, I can see you getting developed ten times better than I could see at any other school.'”

No, but it backs up what Steve Wiltfong said today when he slammed Michigan's recruiting department for being unorganized and not getting the job done. Maybe people will stop blaming bagman and online classes and just admit Harbaugh is failing.

“They haven’t filled the role, and we’ll see who they fill it with because Michigan is one of those schools where assistant coach recruiters are incredibly important because they don’t recruit in the same traditional way that almost every other program that we cover does,” Wiltfong said. “There’s not recruiting meetings. There’s just a lot on the assistant coaches’ plates to go out in their territories or in their position rooms and find guys they think are good enough to help Michigan win championships.

“Chris Partridge was a guy that wasn’t afraid to go into SEC country with his winged helmet logo on his golf shirt and go toe-to-toe for big-time guys and try to get them to come to Michigan. He had some big wins. He also had some close losses. I mean, Willie Gay was a guy who had Michigan in his top two. Otis Reese is a guy who had Michigan in his top two. He really got after it and worked.”

In general, Wiltfong didn’t feel like the Wolverines were recruiting at a championship level with Partridge. He felt Ohio State and Penn State made it more of a priority, so losing Partridge could only widen that gap.

“I just don’t think, collectively, this staff is recruiting at a level to win a national championship across the board,” Wiltfong said. “It’s a blow losing a guy in Partridge, who I feel like is one of your best recruiters when the emphasis on recruiting at Michigan isn’t the same as it is at Ohio State and Penn State right now. We’re starting to see it on the field.”

Clearly a softball school because that's the only sport that I can recall them being anything close to dominant in the B1G.

Band school....

Looks to me like they're a men's gymnastics school, or maybe a men's trampoline school. Take your pick....
