"one of our greatest wins ever", that 13-13 contest in '92.

Paul Warfield (who was criminally underutilized at Ohio State) wasn't a receiver until the NFL and all except Anthony Carter couldn't carry his jock strap.
Well, yes and no. Ohio State usually lined up in a split T in those days. Warfield was always the deep threat and I watched more than one perfect ball from Unverferth bounce off of Paul's hands/numbers/facemask in his sophomore and junior year, but as a senior he began to catch those long shots.

Hayes told a story about Warfield's development - "After his sophomore season I gave him a football and told him to toss it in the air and catch it as he walked to class - and if I see you on campus you better have that ball in your hands." I don't know how true the story is, but he told it in class and the players in the class all nodded.

Shea's numbers against the Bucks weren't awful: 2018 20/34 187 yds, 1 TD 1 Int 2019 18/43 305 yds 1 TD and 1 Int. His receivers didn't help him much in both games with lots of dropped balls. In his defense, it was the stats put up by Haskins 20/31 396 6 TDs 0 Int, and Fields 14/25 302 4TDs 0 Int, that cause his numbers to get lost in the slaughter.

I suspect the word from his teammates and the golf story probably played a large part in his not getting any attention. One of the famous stories about Hayes came from an assistant coach who arrived on campus and pulled out his golf bag and clubs. Woody said something like, "You might as well put those back in the trunk, you won't have time for golf here."

In 2010s, that's awful.
34 attempts and 187 yards ? Yikes.
18/43 the next year is also bad. That many incompletions means punter is doing a lot of work. He also fumbled, which has always been one of his issues. People just look at this TD:Int ratio at Ole Miss and thought it's OK, but he's careless with the ball... 1 TD 2 turnovers, with a lot of punting = Loss.

Wasn't he the clown that chirped "Ohio State ain't ready for the ass whopping they are about to receive"? Funny for a QB they averages 19/39, 246 yards, 1 TD and 1 Int in the biggest rivalry in college football, while his counterparts go 17/28, 349 yards, 5 TD and 0 Int.

Actually, those are really bad.

38-77, 49.4%, 492 yds, 6.4 ypa, 2 TD, 2 int

Both on the ass end of a vicious gorilla-fistings, when you'd expect much more than 246 ypg trying to catch up from waaaay behind.

To build on that, he had one good half in those two games. In the first half of the 2019 game, he actually shredded the defense for 250 yards and a TD on 14 for 19 passing. He had no answer, though, after the defense made halftime adjustments and Shea-Butter went 4 of 24 for 55 yards and a pick. So, you take away the first half of the 2019, and his three other halves in The Game are 24/58 for 242 yards, with 1 TD and 2 INTs...which is 8/19 for 81 yards per half.

LONGTIME lurker here (and other sites) who has decided to post. Saw this on 11W. "My Favorite Things" is very good with some excellent articles. This is the latest. Posting it here because of the recap of the Scum game included. Never realized Doss and Gamble collided on the last play. The article recaps how the "Luckeyes" made up for years of no luck. As I recapped those years with my 28-year-old son, I told him how, even after 15-1, I still curl up into "a mental fetal position" during The Game and wait for us to find a way to lose (although I've gotten much better). He's always berating me for my lack of faith. I tell him he just cannot appreciate how, from 1969 to 2000, I had lived through year after year after year after year of heartbreak in The Game or just-missed Natties. He said he couldn't image going through that and compares the 2015 season to all of my years of heartache. Fun conversations. Anyway, if you haven't seen these articles, I highly recommend them.

The mention of the '84 game reminded me of the unbelievable catch that Rhodes Scholar Mike Lanese made in that game. Then it hit me: In the WR discussion we forget better receivers than the vast majority that are in the discussion for them. (and theirs aren't Rhodes Scholars)

You suggesting that Desmond Howard and Mario I-scored-a-fucking-6-on-the-Wunderlic Manningham lack the basic ingredients needed to be a Rhodes Scholar?

I'm shocked.
