2020 Team Discussion Thread

I agree as well. I am very old school and still believe there was something good about just using polls and not having a playoff - then arguing all winter about who was really the better team. Instead we have this mini-tournament that purports to "prove" something it really doesn't. An expanded playoff just makes that worse. (We won the NC in 2002 with a team that couldn't hold a handle to the 1996 Buckeyes. We may have won the championship - but we were far from the best team.)

But I still cherish every team and every season - and every game.

Couldn’t disagree more about the 02 team. Yes, they could be underwhelming at times, but they went 14-0 through an absolutely brutal schedule and had NFL players at every position.
They also didn’t have Stanley Jackson....

I can name six plays that would have given the 2002 team a 7-6 season. I loved that team. But they were not the best team in the country that year. But they did win the NC - which is my point. They are two different things.

So with a global pandemic ongoing and the idea of players potentially missing 21 days due to a positive COVID-19 test, the Buckeyes depth could be tested more than it ever has been. Good thing Ohio State has one of the deepest rosters in America.

“We’re going to be ready to play on [Oct.] 24,” Ohio State coach Ryan Day said last week. “The ramp-up to that and the 20 hours and putting on pads has been well-thought out. We’ll be ready to go. We’ll play with depth.”

Ohio State might be the only program in the Big Ten that can roll through its roster on game day and never have too much of a drop in talent. Such is the advantage of recruiting at an incredible level, in that department easily overpowering the rest of the league that is still trying to play catch-up to the three-time Big Ten champs.

The season of depth is quickly approaching, and the Buckeyes have plenty of it to survive.

“This season more than any other, you’re going to have to depend on inexperienced players to step in and fill roles,” Ohio State defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs said. “So we’re working really hard on coaching our depth.”

Who's ready for a young, hungry secondary coached by Coach Coombs?!

I’m looking forward to seeing this group play, not least because they give every appearance of being “hungry”, and since many of them have grandparents younger than me, I won’t quibble about calling them young. We should keep in mind though, that while Marcus Williamson is likely to be the only Senior who will get significant playing time, Shaun Wade, Sevyn Banks, Cam Brown, and Josh Proctor are all Juniors, and that’s all the older many Buckeye DBs get before they move on.

As with any other year, let’s not paint the end-zones in September, but imho we do have good reason to be optimistic this year. The biggest unknown on defense in my opinion is Coombs as a coordinator. He’s done his other jobs very well, but college football history is littered with the remains of good position coaches who became bad coordinators. Even here though, I think there are good reasons for optimism.

“Now let’s just get through the next 27 days with zero bad news” said he, knocking on wood.

I missed the interview live but I'm convinced this will be the best offense we've ever assembled to date after listening to coach Wilson.

*4 of 5 up front are 5 stars and Munford could be a first rounder too as a 4 star.

*Justin Fields is the best QB we've ever had. He's Braxton but with Dwaynes arm. Also he doesn't turn the ball over often which is rare.

*RB- Sermon is a receiving threat and Teague is a downhill punisher.

TE- we can do it all here. We literally have 3 here that will play on sunday.

WR- Wilson singled out Jameson as he should have. Jameson legit is probably the fastest kid we've had since Ted at WR. Then you add Jameson to Wilson who's a 1st rounder and Olave who's a 1st rounder and you have an unstoppable starting 3.

Then there's the two 6'2 200+ studs we have as freshman, the Texas WR record holder, and Mookie Cooper who I think is going to have a very big career.

I'm telling you guys... how do you stop this.

Catch them in late November or early December when the weather won't let them pass, then load the box against the run.

Or play them sans Justin Fields because of contact tracing/COVID.

Or play their back up OL for the same reason.

None of these things are unreasonably small percentage events.

Yep, weather is going to decide more than a few games in the B1G this season.
