2020-2021 Ohio State Men's Basketball (Official Thread)

Lol at the quote from Gaffney's Dad
Here's the quote:

"Gaffney’s father, Kevin Gaffney, told The Dispatch that the family wasn’t pleased with his lack of playing time in his first and only season.

“He’s not wanted down there,” he said on March 22. “It’s a shame they would treat an Ohio kid like that. That’s real tough for him, especially mentally. He’s finishing spring semester, and I talked to the compliance office about the transfer protocol. We’ll leave our options open.”"

Does this guy even remember that he only scored 1 point/game for his first 2 years at UC? Stick it out, man! Of course, this is Alonzo’s 3rd “transfer” since his soph year of HS...

The Buckeyes will open the season against Oakland on Nov. 11, and the out-of-conference opponents will feature a CBS Sports Classic matchup with North Carolina on Dec. 19 at a yet-to-be disclosed location.

They'll also participate in the Battle 4 Atlantis, an eight-team early season tournament in the Bahamas, on Nov. 25-27. Creighton, Duke, Memphis, Texas A&M, West Virginia, Wichita State and Utah are locked in as participants. The Buckeyes will play three games over three days.

Ohio State's Big Ten/ACC Challenge opponent is not yet set. That will take place in early December along with two Big Ten games surrounding its Dec. 9 home game against Towson.

After two years of playing one game per season at St. John Arena, Ohio State has not yet announced any games at the historic building next season. The arena is not mentioned in the press release announcing the non-conference slate.

Ohio State will take on Oakland (Nov. 11), Niagara (Nov. 15), Akron (Nov. 19), Towson (Dec. 9), Morehead State (Dec. 22) and Alabama A&M (Dec. 30) as part of next season's non-conference slate. These home games are typically known as "buy games," a name derived from the major conference programs paying the mid-major or low-major teams to play at their arena.

Chris Holtmann has a history with Akron's coach, John Groce, who's now leading Akron's program. Groce was an assistant coach at Ohio State between 2005 and 2008, and he hired Holtmann as one of his assistants while working as Ohio University's head coach in 2009. They spent two years together in Athens, Ohio.

On Nov. 5, the Buckeyes will play their preseason exhibition against a yet-to-be-named opponent. It's expected to be an in-state team from the Division-II or Division-III level.

That is flat out embarrassing. Holtmann should be ashamed of himself for booking that "schedule".
last year's non-conference schedule consisted of 3 games against quadrant 1 opponents (villanova, kentucky, and west virginia), 2 games against quadrant 2 opponents (north carolina and cincinnati), and 6 games against stinkers.

next year's non-conference schedule consists of north carolina, 3 games against a field of [duke, creighton, west virginia, wichita state, memphis, utah, and texas a&m], what will probably be a mid-range acc team like nc state, what should be a decent akron team, and 5 stinkers. the gavitt games have yet to be announced, but i'm thinking osu won't be in it.

i think the strength of schedule will end up approximating last year's strength of schedule, which ended up being worse than we were expecting. cincinnati and especially north carolina never honored their end of the deal. our remaining non-conference games were pathetic and dragged down our overall strength of schedule. next year's non-conference schedule may not be as strong on paper when compared to last year's on-paper strength, but i think we'll face a better brand of cupcakes, which will help.

all of that being said, i certainly agree that the 2020 non-conference schedule doesn't bring near the excitement that last year's did. fortunately, north carolina will almost certainly be (much) better and the b4a will be exciting. let's hope we advance far enough and play duke or creighton. next year's team has the opportunity to determine just how strong their non-conference strength of schedule will be.

Disagree. I would give the schedule a solid B, but it could turn into an A-. The only quibble with the nonconference I have is they won't have both one HM home AND true road game. This is a very premature list of the nonconference opponents. You are looking at a wildly incomplete version of it. If the ultimate list of nonconference opponents they actually play includes Wichita State, Texas A&M, Duke, Virginia, and North Carolina, it is hard to argue with that. Like I said, maybe one more HM game would be ideal, but overall not bad at all, and certainly not embarrassing.

North Carolina was garbage last year, are they going to see a drastic turn around? A decent Akron team? Man you are really trying to see the brightside of this crappy schedule. I don't care because the Big Ten is tough enough but its pretty weak

next year's non-conference schedule

Buckguy and DZ I was not really referring to the entire schedule but to the home games against those 5-6 teams listed above all of which are home games. Those games with the possible exception of Akron really do a lot for getting people's asses in the seats at the Schott and really put a lot of enthusiasm into the program. I know that we get UNC here also along with a mid ACC team but it still does not make up for the 5 crap games that we are playing at home.

will they? we don't know. should they? yes. i mean, they're north carolina. their standard is to finish well above 80th, which was their final net ranking. on a neutral court, my guess is they'll prove to be a quadrant 1 opponent. last year was probably a one-season aberration.

A decent Akron team? Man you are really trying to see the brightside of this crappy schedule.
listen, last year's non-conference schedule consisted of 5 nameworthy opponents and 6 laughers. next year's non-conference schedule consists of 5 high-majorish teams (a team like wichita state has a high-major reputation) and 6 "others." one of those others is an akron team that will be far better than any of the 6 cupcakes we played last year. that's the comparison i'm making here. akron is sort of a bonus. an extra.

as i stated, i think the overall strength of schedule might end up being about the same as last year's because the bottom half of our non-conference will be better than last year's putrid bottom half. those games usually aren't exciting, but they're still a substantial part of the equation that determines a team's non-conference strength of schedule. furthermore, like i pointed out, next year's team gets to determine their own strength of schedule. win the first and hopefully the second game of the b4a and we'll have a strong schedule. it's up to us. we get what we earn.
